Purists would insist that you start with Galactic Patrol and go on, since Triplanetary was originally not a Lensman novel and First Lensman was written after the others, and both always contained spoilers for the others, which revealed only slowly what was going on behind the scenes.
To paraphrase, the dialogue of Galactic Patrol may seem cliched, but they were fresh when Smith wrote it and it was the legions of imitators after Smith that made it cliched.
It is the story of Kimball Kinnison, from his graduation into the Galactic Patrol, through his first mission which was more likely to end in death then success, on to his promotion to a Gray Lensman, and his location and destruction of the Boskone command base in our galaxy.

In the Lensman novels, the Galactic Patrol was a combination military force and interstellar law-enforcement agency, charged with the defense and preservation of Civilization.
The Lensmen were the elite of the Galactic Patrol, and Lensmen tended to hold the majority of the senior-executive positions in the Patrol, although non-Lensmen personnel were essential to the organization's success, and garnered almost as much respect as their Lens-bearing superiors.
Galactic Coordinator, a semi-political post which, in effect, was a military governorship over the second of the two galaxies in which the Patrol operated.

The Adrenaline Vault Review of Galactic Patrol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
Galactic Patrol certainly succeeds in its objective, but to be fair to readers it is necessary to evaluate this game in comparison to the current leaders in this genre which I love, not those of almost 3 decades ago.
Given the basic nature of Galactic Patrol, the appropriate comparison is not to full 3D action shooters such as Rage's Incoming or Blue Byte's Extreme Assault but rather to the best of the 2D/3D hybrid scrolling shooters (the objects on the screen may rotate in 3D but the gameplay is largely two-dimensional).
Galactic Patrol would have been a fine shareware game 5 years ago, but when dealing with current competition among classic arcade shooters it just cannot hold its own.

 Applelinks.com: Review: Game: Galactic Patrol
"Galactic Patrol" is billed as a 3D homage to the classic video games of the 80s, and that's exactly what it is. Taking its cue from three or four games from the glory days of the arcade, "Galactic Patrol" manages to save them all from their arch enemy...monotony.
But unlike its mentors, "Galactic Patrol" allows you to move across the entire screen--as in "1942"--to avoid your attackers.
Otherwise, with its multitude of enemies and powerups, nonstop action and simple, colorful graphics, "Galactic Patrol" is an ample successor to the coin op classics of the 80s.

The Galactic Patrol, Noreascon 4 and Doc Smith
The almost-as-simple answer is because they bring us back to the same sense of adventure, and universe ranging possibility that E.E. Smith's intergalactic sagas brought to the SF community back in 1928, with Skylark of Space, followed a few years later by his much loved stories of the Galactic Patrol.
So as we planned the bid for Noreascon 4, the Galactic Patrol, the Lensmen, Doc Smith and the entire Space Opera riff came to represent the playful, optimistic, naive yet idealistic part of science fiction that we all fell in love with during our own Golden Ages.

The Galactic Patrol is a mixture of what you would consider a paramilitary force - space navy, ground assault force, and police department - all rolled into one.
The Patrol is there wherever there is a need - as a police force to settle differences, as disaster relief and assistance when needed, and as either a spaceborne or ground attack force when that becomes necessary, although I can assure you that that is quite unlikely.
One of the unusual facts concerning the Patrol was that with so many different races with so many different levels of technology and physiology, there was no way the Council and the Patrol could settle on a single type of weapon that all races could use.

The Internet Book Database of Fiction :: Detailed view for the book: Galactic Patrol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
Originally published starting with Galactic Patrol (though now officially starting with "Triplanetary", to which the above links), the Lensman series deals with a slowly-escalating war in a far-distant future, a war that has many levels (levels we don't penetrate for several volumes).
How the Lens is created, no one in the Patrol understands; but what it does is give the wearer perfect telepathy -- the ability to communicate mind-to-mind -- so that no language, howsoever alien, is a barrier to communication.
Purists would insist that you start with Galactic Patrol and go on, since Triplanetary was originally not a Lensman novel and First Lensman was written after the others, and both always contained spoilers for the others, which revealed only slowly what was going on behind the scenes.
