Galashiels has no history apart from the narrative of the development of its manufactures, and although mills on the Gala are mentioned in the early 17th century, it was not till the 18th that a general move was made down to the banks of the stream which afforded such excellent water-power.
Galashiels proper was made a burgh of barony in 1599, and, till 1850, was administered by a baron-bailie under the Scotts of Gala, who succeeded the Pringles of Gala as superiors in 1632.
Galashiels parish is situated partly in Selkirkshire and partly in Roxburghshire, its larger portion being in the former county.

Galashiels is a busy town on the A7 road from Carlisle to Edinburgh.
Galashiels' war memorial was built to remember the 635 men from the town killed during the First World War, a strikingly large proportion of a pre-war population of 14,500.
Galashiels Station was closed in 1969 with the rest of the line, but since 1994 a campaign has been steadily building steam for a reinstatement of the railway between Edinburgh and Galashiels.

Although Galashiels was originally an ancient settlement located to the south of where it stands today, at the time of survey the present town had only been in existence for around 80 years.

The name Galashiels is derived from shiels or shielings which means dwellings, this is usually preceded by a place or personal name, hence Galashiels means dwellings by the Gala Water.
At the Battle of Flodden the Laird of Galashiels and four of his five sons were killed so that the fifth son, who had been left behind, became the next Laird.
Galashiels has long been associated with the textile trade and the first references to three fulling mills in the town can be traced back to 1585.

Galashiels Academy is a non-denominational comprehensive school providing courses for pupils of all abilities from first to sixth years.
Local archives record that there was a Parish School in Galashiels as early as 1696 and in 1821 a fee-paying school was constructed by public subscription on a site near what is now Market Square.
This is a reference to the Arms of the Burgh of Galashiels which contained two foxes looking up at a plum tree with the motto "Sour 1337 Plums".

The first, of around four miles, is a nameless area of rough pasture laying generally southwest of Galashiels within a wide meander of the River Tweed.
Galashiels is pretty much the public transport hub of the Borders region, with regular services to Melrose, Edinburgh, Jedburgh, Kelso, Peebles and Selkirk as well as long distance coach links to Carlisle, Berwick on Tweed and Newcastle.
