Galaxy Express 999 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Galaxy Express 999 (銀河鉄道999; Ginga Tetsudō Three-Nine) is a manga written and drawn by Leiji Matsumoto, as well as various anime films and TV series based on it.
Unapologetically melodramatic, with highly episodic morality-tale stories, Galaxy Express 999 has a philosophy perhaps closer to that of Friedrich Nietzsche or Ayn Rand than the eastern mysticism often found in anime.
The only current official English-language release of Galaxy Express 999 material on DVD are the two movies released in Korea, which utilize Viz's subtitle scripts.

Animefringe: June 2004 - Specials - Galaxy Express 999 - The Soul Train
Galaxy Express 999 is a wonderful little expedition into a world where instead of using reconciliatory methods of understanding their problems, people preferably seek to bypass the whole system of absolution and try to "live without regret" so-to-speak, as Tetsuro notes.
Galaxy Express 999 tosses around the theme of a society so hopeless that even the most inhumane motivations, such as murder and moral avoidance, are simply understood as inevitable societal developments.
Galaxy Express 999 openly claims that every person's life is a journey and a chronicle in the making, but what the film also notes is that people should be wary of becoming too materialistic and covetous through their desire to satisfy such chronicles.

Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy Review
Galaxy Express 999:Eternal Fantasy is an hour-long feature from Japan that picks up where the original film and TV series left off.
The short running time of the film (which one assumes is intended to be the first in a series of new Galaxy Express films) saves it from the occasional ponderous nature of the original series.
Helmazria, a Maytel look-alike, is in the service of the Metanoids, a weird group of elementals seeking to destroy all life in the universe, and she is in hot pursuit of Tetsuro and Maytel across the galaxy.

 Reader Review: Galaxy Express
As such, Galaxy Express is meant to stand alone; most of the loose ends that served as the foundation for sequel material in the original have been tied, rather sadly in some points with reserved editing.
In Galaxy Express, she is destroyed simultaneously with the planet Maetel; the entire scene of Claire sacrificing herself to save Tetsuro has been edited out.
Overall, Galaxy Express is certainly not for all people, and it's certainly not for all the people who liked the original or the newer dubs.

THEM Anime Reviews 4.0 - Galaxy Express 999
I had seen Star Blazers and though it is my understanding that Galaxy Express: Eternal Fantasy hints it might be related to the rest of Matsumoto’s baroque fictional universe, it doesn’t contain any of the characters associated with any of the other shows.
I mention this because we do have a number of elements and characters that appear in Galaxy Express 999 that, in a sense, I think the viewer is already expected to know and be a bit excited to see.
Galaxy Express is space opera in a very classic sense with sometimes overbearing themes, speeches, ruthless villains, extraordinary epic heroes, and its often somewhat anachronistic design choices.

Galaxy Express 999: The Signature Edition; Adieu, Galaxy Express 999
The lengthy trip quickly becomes both a metaphor for life and an object lesson, as Tetsuro eagerly heads out to get his new (or, symbolically, "adult") body, but begins to learn that the leap from human to machine has hidden psychological costs.
And Tetsuro, caught in the middle of the war, is called back to the 999 to fight all the same fights again.
My advice would be to skip Adieu altogether and pair Galaxy Express 999 as a double feature with the Harlock film Arcadia of My Youth.
