That recording session resulted in Intensity and it would be some 15 years before Pepper would lead a combo in the studio again.
Pepper's later career was marked by a switch to Galaxy Records where he produced his famous Maiden Voyage Sessions, his strings recording, Winter Moon and his final duets with his favorite pianist George Cables, Goin' Home and Tête-à-Tête.
Recorded in between court dates and prison, the listener would never know the turmoil of Pepper's life.

Despite the dwindling music industry, it’s quite surprising to learn that two record labels were recently launched in town.
These are E-Real Records and Putumayo World Music, which obviously couldn’t care less about getting wiped out by the piracy phenomenon, so as long as they get to highlight what real singing talent is all about.
Galaxy even trumpeted the deal with a launch held recently at the Shangri-La Plaza mall, featuring local talents such as Puro Ritmo, Wahijuara, Makiling Ensemble and Tropical Depression with Budoy Mirabiles of Jr.

Previous collections of Galaxy material from the late 1960s and 1970s have tended to focus on the label's handful of chart entries or local nostalgia, the latter mainly consisting of the sweet soul style that Bay Area aficionados are so enamoured of.
The growing influence of rock in San Francisco soul and R&B, combined with Galaxy A&R prexy Ray Shanklin's preference for old-fashioned blues, meant they was many a musical hybrid present in a Galaxy record, reflecting the fascinating emergence and divergence of styles that was occurring daily in the label's San Francisco Bay Area home region.
The CD covers a five-year period beginning with the company's move in late 1967 from San Francisco across the Bay to a new location at 1281 30th Street in Oakland, its walls pockmarked with bullet holes from a recent police shootout with the Black Panthers.

Within two years, however, Galaxy ceased to exist, and the 45s it had released became highly coveted by collectors, especially in England.

Alex Moodrey's Galaxy Recording Studio was actually some sort of all-in-one portable system which he somehow wrangled permission to set up for the day in a room in this Main Street old office building.
Everything would be recorded live to tape, without the benefit of baffles, EQ, reverb, DI, overdubbing or even enough mics.

The 8-track Ampex multi-track recorder which used one-inch-wide tape on 10 inch metal spools was pretty high tech for the time and there was an impressive array of quality mics and sound processing effects units.

Lyrically, The Choir has always outshone a majority of songwriters, and they continue to do so: "Like the snake who calls the lizard a reptile/ Like the chimp who calls the jester a clown/ When I tell you, "You oughta be ashamed or yourself/ I've gotta set my knees on the ground".
