These NPC guided ships will cruise the outer reaches of the galaxy to provide gathering places, holodeck competitions, and crafting in their many labs.
The best known Galaxy class ship was the Enterprise-D of Star Trek: The Next Generation which served as the Federation Flagship during it’s time in service.
Galaxy class ships are designed for long term exploration missions, but because of their size and power and creature comforts, they also serve many combat, rescue, and diplomatic functions for the Federation.

The Deeper Side of Trek: Galaxy of the Elite?
I’ve been through the Star Trek canon and back, and I’ve found that the visible Trek universe (or at least the parts where humans live) is a pretty elite place.
The point here is that, really, because Star Trek is about exploring space and spacefaring characters, the franchise hasn’t cared to examine the more routine lifestyles, the mundane aspects of daily life.
In the newer incarnations of Trek, we eventually got slightly more balanced coverage among supporting characters, and we’d occasionally get characters who were closer to ground level.

 AboutFilm.Com - Galaxy Quest (1999)
Galaxy Quest begins at a "Galaxy Quest" convention, where the cast is introduced to the adoring fans by Guy Fleegman (Sam Rockwell).
As Trek fans know, when the show's stars visited an alien planet, they were always accompanied by an generic red-shirted crew member, who was invariably killed off fairly quickly to demonstrate that the heroes had gotten themselves into a pickle.
It seems that these aliens, called Thermians, have picked up broadcasts of "Galaxy Quest" and, not firmly grasping of the concept of make-believe, they have assumed that these are "historical records." In fact, the peace-loving Thermians are so impressed with "Galaxy Quest" that they have modeled their entire society on the show.

The Deeper Side of Trek: Dogs of War
Trek is aware of this and does not pretend to be "above" war.
The Klingons, in fact, were introduced in "Errand of Mercy" -- an episode, interestingly enough, in which Kirk vehemently tries to convince a society of pacifists to rise up and engage in war because their rights were being trampled.
The Dominion War storyline is a very important one because it showed that although Trek has always tried to depict a positive, moral view of future humanity, war is something we’re not likely to simply and easily escape.

The Audio Revolution Review of 'Galaxy Quest'
In the film ‘Galaxy Quest,’ a TV series with that title, about a spacecraft with a heroic crew and a mandate to explore the stars, slogged along for three years in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s.
Although the filmmakers have a tendency to play up the cheesy aspects of ‘Galaxy Quest’ more than they strictly should (the real ‘Star Trek’ did have a few authentically inspiring moments in the midst of all the plywood, after all), they ultimately put a positive spin on fans and fandom.
There are two kinds of special effects on view: the deliberately tacky ones on the clips of the show-within-the-show ‘Galaxy Quest’ the TV series and those in the body of the story as the actors embark on interstellar travel and confront various non-human extraterrestrials.

 Movie Review: 'Galaxy Quest'
"Galaxy Quest" depends entirely on our willingness to identify so thoroughly with a favorite TV show that we begin to believe it is real.
So when a quartet of geeks with pasted-down hair, beatific smiles and kazoo voices approach him, insisting they are Thermians who need his help, he thinks it's more of the same and that they're involved with the personal appearance he's agreed to do on the next day.
The key players are Tim Allen, all hearty bombast as the captain; Sigourney Weaver, unrecognizable in a blond wig, as the character whose only function on the show was to show off her curves and repeat everything the computer said; and Alan Rickman, hilariously sarcastic about the Spock-like alien he must play.

Galaxy Quest Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"Galaxy Quest" is a mocking yet reverential comedy for "Star Trek" fans and non-fans alike, and is probably the best gag that has been pulled on the sci-fi franchise since William Shatner did the "Get a life!" skit on "Saturday Night Live".
In the film, "Galaxy Quest" is the name of a "Star Trek"-like television series that was cancelled in 1982, yet remains near and dear to many (the so-called 'Questerites').
Granted, "Galaxy Quest" is not the type of film that will have you laughing uncontrollably-- instead, it is the type of comedy where the big laughs are sporadic, but you're guaranteed to sit through the entire film with a silly grin on your face.

Galaxy Quest is a 1999 motion picture written by Robert Gordon and David Howard and directed by Dean Parisot, starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub.
As an acknowledged homage to Star Trek, there are a variety of correspondences between the world of Galaxy Quest and the world of Star Trek.
Conversely, most of the plot, themes, and subplots of Galaxy Quest can be followed and appreciated by those who know little to nothing about Star Trek, although Trekkies will usually either have a richer appreciation or a deeper dissatisfaction with the film, as a neutral response may be difficult to find in such circles.

Note: Although both the Andromeda (M31) and M33 (which LGS 3 orbits) galaxies have been credited by some sources with the 3 million light year distance that E.T.'s homeworld is given, most sources give their distances as 2.2 and 2.5 million light years respectively.
Note: Perhaps the Milky Way Galaxy of Star Trek is the very same one as the one in E.T., with the events of SW4 overlapping (via the wormhole) the year 2277 AD, eight years after the end of Kirk's first five-year mission on the Starship Enterprise (just as in RL).

Star Trek V has provoked strong controversy among fans, many of whom consider this movie to be the weakest of the Trek films.
Kirk went from Earth to the center of the galaxy in a matter of days in this movie, whereas it was estimated that USS Voyager would take 70 years to cross the galaxy, despite being a much faster ship.
The Star Trek V novelization also referenced and showed Sybok showing the crew how to radically adjust the deflector shields in order to be able to pass through the extreme radiation environment of the Great Barrier.
