For much of the Third Age, the Corsairs used the Havens as a base of operations, and the city at the head of the inlet was called the City of the Corsairs.
The Grey Havens were west of the Shire beyond the Tower Hills.
The Havens were located where the River Lune emptied into the Gulf of Lune, which in turn opened onto the Sea.

In The Lord of The Rings we meet Galdor of the Havens, sent by Cirdan to the council of Elrond.
It may be noted that Galdor is another name of similar sort and period of origin, but he appears as a messenger from Cirdan and is called Galdor of the Havens.
In fact Galdor was not slain, but led the fugitives over the pass of Cristhorn, while Glorfindel came up with the rear, and in the name-list to the Fall of Gondolin, it is said that he went to Sirion’s mouth, and ‘he dwelleth yet in Tol Eressea’.

I don't think Tolkien intended Glorfindel in LOTR to be the same as Glorfindel in the Silmarillion when he first wrote LOTR: he was re-using names (eg.
Galdor of the Havens vs. Galdor of the people of the Tree in the 1917 Fall of Gondolin, Book of Lost Tales part 2).
It was only when he had to seriously think about the relations between the two books that he decided that he *was* - and he could just have easily decided that he wasn't (which is what he decided regarding Galdor).

No wonder most people say TTT is their least favorite of the three.
In the scene where we see Arwen leaving for the Grey Havens and has that Ring-flu induced hallucination about her effeminate future son, Figwit is the one that tell her to get her bony ass back with the others.
Arwen's brother probably doesn't address his own sister as "Lady Arwen" and "my lady" (unless he's mad at her for repeatedly stealing screentime from him and his buddy Glorfindel).
