One of the most renowned contemporary nature photographers, Galen Rowell, died last weekend in the crash of a private plane near the eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada.
Like his predecessors, Rowell produced images that are at once true and false, although their falsity is not the product of intentional deception or the unethical manipulation of their content.
Through the work of Rowell and other such artists, we are able to own a moment, a place, without altering it; we can enjoy a romanticized landscape, adopt it as our image of reality, and allow that to shape our attitudes toward the use and protection of actual nature.
