		Galena was originally founded as a mining town in 1879.
		Galena went through a succession of ownership transfers until it was purchased by the Gelsky’s who constructed Galena Lodge in its present location, using remnants of the old townsite for much of the interior construction.
		Haims came up with a master plan for Galena that included overnight accommodations and trail development but chances for making the resort a profitable wintertime enterprise were handicapped by the lodge’s remote location, difficult access for employees and the lack of a reliable source of power.

	Sawtooth National Forest Recreational Activities
		It is a short ride north on the Highway to Galena Lodge to complete the loop.
		Stacks of logs were kept at the summit for wagons to drag as a brake when descending the infamous "Sawtooth Grade".
		It is possible to ride off both sides of the summit, but several sections of the Galena (south) side of the road are in disrepair and necessitate walking.

		A backcountry skier injured in an avalanche near Galena Summit Friday, March 25, was rescued by two fellow skiers and a hasty team of rescuers flown to the base of the slide area by a Ketchum-based helicopter pilot.
		Ketchum resident Steve Waltcher sustained multiple fractures after being swept through the trees by an avalanche calculated to be about 140 feet wide and one- to two-feet deep.
