 Gales Ales
Gales Ales is an old brewery situated in Horndean[?], on the edge of Waterlooville, near Portsmouth in Hampshire, England.
It makes the nutty HSB (Horndean Special Brew) and the newer GSB (Gales Special Brew).
It takes it water from under the South Downs[?], and the yeast and 'licour', coupled with the local brewing style, produce beers with a sparse head, quite dark in colour.

In 1853, Richard Gale's son, George Alexander was running the Inn, which by now included the famous brewery, and the family business continued to expand.
Gales produce a range of different beers, wines and whiskey, the most well known of which is HSB - or Horndean Special Bitter.
Real Ales and beers are often regarded as a "man's" drink, but you will often see women enjoying this tipple, breaking the tradition.

Wanna argument? Microbreweries: Brewing Up A Storm?
The case of Gales Ales in Horndean, Hants and its takeover by Fuller's of London illustrates this phenomenon.
With a modern name for a very old business, the microbreweries make small quantities of real ales, offering them for sale through free houses, their own pub outlets, beer retailers and other channels.
At its most opinionated, this sector could claim that it is environmentally beneficial, as it tends to source its raw materials locally, and favours organic methods.

Gales HSB - Review - The Sweet Taste Of Autumn
There are an enormous variety of real ales to choose from in the UK but as a southerner and as a Brightonian my favourite pint is Gale's HSB.
George Gale & Co Ltd the maker of HSB is a traditional brewer first established in 1847 at Horndean, just 12 miles north of Portsmouth in Hampshire.
Having said it is as strong ale it’s by no means as strong as some comparable beers in its class.

With production ending at George Gale and Company in Horndean, Bob Marvin (he’s the one in the middle) realized that a bit of brewing history could be lost.
Marvin, head brewer at the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, worked at Gales until 1994, so got together with Ringwood managing director David Welsh and Gales’ retired head brewer Derek Lowe to strike the deal to get this 30-barrel fermenting vessel moved to Hampshire.
This vessel was used to brew the classic Gales Ales Prize Old Ale (9% abv).

This wasn't really unexpected; since the demise of the Gales family within the directorate, Gales had become very lackadaisical in their overall management policy and, in spite of much misguided expenditure (The Chairmaker's Arms for instance!), many of their outlets were no longer offering what their customers really wanted.
I am devastated after hearing that Gales brewery in Horndean is going to be shut down, I grew up in Portsmouth and moved to Bristol 20 years ago, all this time I have been getting my regular delivery of HSB either by members of my family or occasional visits 'back down south'.
I well remember that the then George Gale made a habit of appearing in each of his pubs unannounced and ordering a half pint of "Ordinary" (now "Butser Brew") just to check that the quality of the beer was up to scratch.

Taking pride of place in the brewery yard in Christchurch Road is a 30-barrel fermenting vessel that was formerly used to brew up Gales Ales Prize Old Ale, a nine per cent ABV stunner, created by the Horndean company.
After 159 years of beer production George Gale and Company Limited was taken over by London brewers Fullers in the spring and production moved to Chiswick to allow the Horndean premises to be developed.
Until 1994 Ringwood Brewery's head brewer Bob Mavin had worked at Gales and thought it would be a tragedy if the Prize Old Ale vessel was lost.

I always thought the fact that this pub also had one of the best and most extensive range of microbrewery ales in that part of town was a wonderful way of cocking a snook.
I don't think real ales should be what we call in our house "beer festival warm" - where loads of barrels are sitting outdoors.
However, with the new(ish) fashion for providing more real ales, I think a lot of pubs are finding they have to provide more storage space for beer - the current barrel, the one that's resting etc. It takes up a lot of space.

The Publican - number one for licensed trade news, and Proud of Pubs - Home - Fuller's slammed over Gales closure
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) said Fuller’s was shutting down the brewery on March 31 despite more than 150 years of brewing heritage and the signatures of more than 5,000 people on a petition aiming to keep the brewery open.
Despite assurances from Fuller’s that it would now brew the main Gales brands — HSB, Butser, Festival Mild and Prize Old Ale — at its brewery in Chiswick, West London, Mr Benner questioned whether the Gales ales had a long term future.
This is a small amount to gain in return for destroying a century and a half of Hampshire’s heritage and dealing a blow to all fans of Gales beers," he added.
