Galgate is a small village in northern England, just south of Lancaster University, and about half a mile south of Lancaster itself in the county of Lancashire.
Indeed, the area in which Galgate is situated is the only geographical location in the world where all four modes of transport (road, rail, sea, and air) travel in the same direction (map).
Galgate once had a thriving silk industry and many of the installations still stand.

The Galgate was a steel four-masted barque built by the Whitehaven Shipbuilding Company in August 1888.
The Galgate was sunk 170 miles W by N of Ushant by a German submarine on the 7th May 1916, whilst bound from Portland, Oregon, for Falmouth with a cargo of barley.
The Galgate, a vessel of 2.631 tons, was last reported as having arrived at St.Michaels on April 24.

Galgate is a small village situated on the A6 trunk road, which runs almost parallel alongside the canal and the main West London to Glasgow railway line, for a few hundred yards.
Galgate has some of the nicest public moorings along the Lancaster Canal and are usually full most summer weekends.
On the other side of the bridge, is the original Galgate Marina, recently closed and to be refurbished by British Waterways shortly.

Last night, my mother rang to tell me that Galgate, the village just south of Lancaster where I lived 1994-96, was on the TV news: the River Conder had breached its flood barriers after sustained (though not especially heavy, to my knowledge) rainfall.
It was further to Abbeystead than I remembered, and some sort of fete prevented me from wandering around with the camera, so I decided to go on yet again - it couldn't be much further to the Trough of Bowland.
