GALKAYO, Somalia, November 22 (UNHCR) – Mana stubbornly refused to leave her house as violence swirled around the Somali capital of Mogadishu for most of this year, but 10 days ago she was finally stunned into fleeing the city.
She complains bitterly about the difficulties of daily life in Galkayo, where she can only afford to feed her family once a day because the fresh wave of displacement has led to rising costs.
Another mother, Fatuma, said that all the passengers on her bus to Galkayo were robbed even thought the driver had paid a fee to armed men at a roadblock.

Somali Islamic militia on Thursday announced plans to seize control of the central regional capital of Galkayo, sparking a massive deployment by their rivals and raising the spectre of renewed bloodshed in the shattered East African nation.
The other half of Galkayo, the capital of central Mudug region, is ruled by elders allied to the Islamists, who control the capital Mogadishu and whose growing influence has threatened the authority of the transitional government based in the south-central town of Baidoa.
The people of Galkayo are happy to see us but the regional officers of Puntland deployed their fighters to the town," Aweys said.

The latest fighting pitted militiamen from two sub-clans, the Saad and Seleeban of the main Hawiye clan and was reportedly sparked by misunderstanding over the right to use grasing lands and water points in Hobyo area.
Medical sources in Galkayo said the wounded, most of whom were women and children, had been admitted at two hospitals in the town run by the medical charity MSF-Holland.
During his visit to Galkayo in February, the Somali transitional president, Abdulahi Yussuf Ahmed, urged clans there to halt the hostilities and instead promote efforts to build peace and disarm armed militias.

The Islmists deny they want to seize Galkayo, a hotbed of support for Somalia's Ethiopian-backed President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, but say they will defend themselves and pursue their attackers wherever they go.
A move on Galkayo would be a major escalation in the deteriorating situation in Somalia that diplomats and analysts fear could erupt into full-scale war and engulf the Horn of Africa region in bloody conflict.

Hassan Sheikh Ahmed, a religious leader in the town, said the clashes were the worst in the region since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre.
Several large shopping malls were set ablaze and property destroyed as the clashes intensified in Galkayo, with hundreds of town-dwellers fleeing to more stable regions, locals said.

Some 12,000 people fled to Galkayo in the autonomous Puntland region to escape the recent fighting in central and southern Somalia between fighters of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), which now controls most of the two disputed areas.
There are 14 refugee settlements around Galkayo town but many of the new arrivals are left to fend for themselves in the streets, living in slum conditions with no access to latrines, washing facilities or potable water, members of the emergency team said.
"Those whose clan is present in southern Galkayo receive protection and support from their clan members, but minority clan groups from further south in Somalia are collected in destroyed buildings and live in abject poverty, requiring immediate assistance," said Alex Tyler, a member of the emergency team.

In Galkayo, Somalia on the 12 April 2007 a ceremony was held that included thanks to amateur radio (ham radio- Helping All Mankind radio) operators for helping facilitate the donation of an ambulance to the Galkayo Region Hospital, (700km north of Mogadishu), Puntland State, Somalia.
The aim of the meeting was to present the ambulance and its key to the regional hospital director.
