		The Book of Kells came to Trinity College, the single constituent college of the University of Dublin, through the agency of Henry Jones, a former scoutmaster general to Cromwell's army in Ireland, and Vice Chancellor of the University, after he became Bishop of Meath in 1661 and, since 1953, has been bound in four volumes.
		The Book of Kells is also known as the "Book of Columba", probably because it was written in the monastery of Iona to honour the saint.
		The most characteristic ornaments of the Book of Kells, as of other illuminated Irish manuscripts of the period, are the closely coiled spirals connected with each other by a number of curves and terminating in the so-called "trumpet pattern".

	Headfort School and connections with Kells
		Kells itself is a small Irish market town which stands on the river Blackwater, part of the Boyne system, and is sited at the junction of five main roads.
		The original is now displayed in Trinity College Dublin but there is a facsimile copy of the Book of Kells in the nave of the church and another in the Town Hall of Kells.
		Aside from the Christian remains, Kells is a quiet town with an hotel, several places to eat within all price ranges, B and B accommodation and a variety of shops.

		The 20-page book of psalms, copied in Latin ten to twelve centuries ago, isn't the first biblical book to be rescued from an Irish bog.
		The Book of Kells was to be their masterwork: the four Gospels of the Christian faith laid lovingly onto the page in Latin and brought to life by the best and most colorful art of the age.
		One page, for example, simply depicts the authors of the four Gospels: Matthew as a man, Mark as a lion, Luke as an ox (or calf), and John as an eagle.

		The manuscript of approximately 20 pages was discovered July 20 in the Irish Midlands when a construction worker spotted something in a bog he was excavating for commercial potting soil.
		"The pages appear to be those of a slim, large-format book with a wraparound vellum or leather cover from which the book block has slipped," the museum news release said.
		The probable age of the manuscript would place it in the same early medieval period as the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the Christian gospels that has been on view in the Old Library at Trinity College since the 19th century, according to the college's Web site, www.tcd.ie/Library/heritage/kells.php.
