Topic: Gallifrey

Gallifrey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gallifrey is also the name of its major city, the Citadel, which holds the Capitol of the Time Lords.
The wastes of Gallifrey include the Death Zone, an area that was used as a gladiatorial arena by the first Time Lords, pitting various species kidnapped from their respective time zones against each other (although Daleks and Cybermen were considered too dangerous to use).
Gallifrey is also the umbrella title of a line of audio plays set in the Doctor Who universe, produced by Big Finish Productions, featuring Louise Jameson as Leela, Lalla Ward as President Romana, and John Leeson as two K-9 units, Mark I and Mark II.

Doctor Who Campaign: The Stardust Memory Chronicles *Actual Play* - Page 8 - RPGnet Forums
Having built up Gallifrey's technology enough to use time travel to loot other race's of their technology, he discovers that Vampires and other magical creatures are a threat to the emergent power.
5,171,282- Gallifrey finishes charting the "proper" course of history as the Academies are formalized with all effort from the beginning of the universe to its end meant to be 'maintained' by the Gallifreyan people and other time sensetive races.
The situation on Gallifrey I described to the players was essentially that the Dalek fleet was already outside the Transduction barriers but it wasn't just an ordinary Dalek fleet (as formidable as that was) but seemingly a fleet composed of every single Dalek throughout history in a massively paradoxial armada that was utterly invincible.

 The Gallifrey Chronicles
Marnal confirms that he deliberately planted the beacon on Sam’s grave to drive a wedge between the Doctor and his current companions, but claims that he is not responsible for Sam’s death; she would have lived a long, worthwhile and politically active life if the Doctor hadn’t stumbled in and rewritten her life history.
Fitz admits to the Doctor that his own muddled memories of Gallifrey’s destruction were restored on Espero, and the Doctor theorises that he tried to erase Fitz’s memories to protect his secret but didn’t do a good enough job.
According to the prophecy as stated by Larna, before its fall, Gallifrey was to be attacked by Omega (The Three Doctors), the Sontarans (The Invasion of Time), Tannis (Death Comes to Time), Faction Paradox (The Ancestor Cell), Varnax (an unmade movie script from the 1990s), Catavolcus (The Neutron Knights), and the Timewyrm (Timewyrm: Revelation).

The End of the World (Doctor Who) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The destruction of the Doctor's home planet (presumably Gallifrey) and of the Time Lords was caused by a Time War involving both the Daleks and the Time Lords, as revealed later in the season in the episode Dalek.
Some earlier serials have stated that the Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey is power source for the TARDIS.
If it was destroyed along with Gallifrey, this may imply a certain amount of bodging was done to overcome the problem.

New Gallifrey's Geography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The passes in the mountain can be easily observed from strategic points along their course, and passage over the peaks is a deadly serious undertaking in the best of times.
Most of this water is run off from the snow and ice in the upper altitudes of the mountains, and provided fresh drinking water for thousands through a series of small rivers, creeks and springs which handle the overflow.
The temperatures drop almost 20 degrees lower then the rest of Southern New Gallifrey during the winter, and snow is an everyday occurrence from late September to early March.

 Gallifrey: Lies
Long before leaving Gallifrey to travel with the Doctor, the young Romana wanders down into the ancient Vaults to get away from the Academy, but her tutor, Braxiatel, follows her and warns her that this area of the Capitol is dangerous and thus off-limits.
Romana returned to Gallifrey in the novel Blood Harvest and had become President by the time of Happy Endings, and K9-II returned to Gallifrey in Lungbarrow; though the audio continuity now seems separate from that of the books, the audios have given no alternative backstory for Romana’s rise to President.
As far as the Gallifrey audios are directly concerned, Romana’s Presidency and her friendship with Leela were effectively established as of Zagreus, which leads into the first Gallifrey series and thence to here.

The Wastebasket: A Brief History of Gallifrey
Rassilon was a young scientist when Gallifrey found itself at war with a race of space-borne Giant Vampires, each of which could suck the life out of an entire planet.
The war took a terrible toll on Gallifrey, and they began to fear all was lost, until Rassilon, working with a brilliant engineer named Omega and others, developed a living metal they called vallidium, which was in fact possessed of a crude sentience and geared toward one single goal, destruction.
They therefore rigged another trial, hoping to put the Doctor out of the way once and for all, and to act as prosecutor, they enlisted an entity calling himself the Valeyard, [54] who was finally revealed to be some strange amalgam of the Doctor’s own darker thoughts, drawn from near the end of his life.

The Gallifrey Chronicles Reviewed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The Doctor's attitude to Marnal is no less interesting, and some mileage is deservedly wrung from the fact that the Doctor is quite content to have forgotten all about the Time Lords and to have left them far in his own past if they were all like Marnal appears to be.
Plus it also sets up the return of the Time Lords, and potentially Gallifrey itself (or a version thereof), in order for them to go to war and be destroyed - for good and all, this time - prior to the start of the new series.
The Gallifrey Chronicles just isn't of the same stature or impact as Lungbarrow was for the NAs, and to my mind The Dying Days remains Lance Parkin's best Doctor Who novel to date.

Gallifrey 2.2 - Spirit (Doctor Who S.)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
This 6th chapter in Big Finish's audio Gallifrey series is very much a character-based piece, examining Romana and Leela, and their contrasting scientific and spiritual approaches.
This is mostly well-handled, ultimately giving Leela enough of a resolution to continue wanting to live on Gallifrey, though a finale with some mind-swapping takes the play into silly SF cliché.
The actual storyline concerning a 'broken man' from Gallifrey's future is full of menace, but very little is actually revealed by the stories end.

Doctor Who - The fall and rise and fall of Gallifrey - feature
I resisted such placement for a while, because I preferred to assume that The Gallifrey Chronicles occurred close to the end of the Eighth Doctor’s lifetime, and I felt that the notion of the planet being somehow “reset” to its pre-Lungbarrow condition was too contrived.
The Gallifrey Chronicles reveals that, just prior to destroying his home world, the Doctor, with the aid of his former companion Compassion, downloaded the entire contents of the Matrix (the vast computer network containing the mental traces of every Time Lord living and dead) into his brain.
Gallifrey is restored, probably using a combination of Remote, Network and TARDIS technology.

Discontinuity Guide - The Gallifrey Chronicles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The destruction of Gallifrey unleashed a vast ripple in the space-time continuum, making it impossible to navigate or even see the area at any point in the planet's history [thus resolving the explosion/erased from history controversy].
This in turn gives him a chance to restore Gallifrey and the Time Lords, which he intends to do after he's defeated the Vore, and which he has clearly done by the time that it is destroyed by the Daleks in the Time War.
As such, there is a lot happening in The Gallifrey Chronicles, but Parkin not only manages to tie up all the loose ends, he also manages to tell a decent story in its own right, with Marnal and the Vore both making interesting additions to the mix.

 Gallifrey - Tardis
This may be due in part to the transduction barrier, which covers the planet and which is almost completely impenetrable by outside forces.
Another example of Gallifrey’s reliance upon the transduction barrier for security occured when the Daleks bypassed Gallifrey’s transduction barrier and exterminated several Time Lords, including the then current President ("The Apocalypse Element").
In both this case and the aforementioned Sontaran invasion, the Time Lords relied upon their guards to deal with the invaders, only to find out that the guards' weaponry (see Staster) was ineffective against their attackers.

Stealing a TARDIS from the repair bays (as the rest were too well guarded), he departed Gallifrey unaware that his House had been excommunicated for creating a new Cousin, their names struck off all records and all his Cousins buried alive in the House for their crime.
He stowed away on board the TARDIS while the Doctor was on Gallifrey discussing the temporal distortions caused by Melanicus, and prevented the Time Lord from being assassinated as he attempted to leave his homeworld.
Although it is now known that his body rests in his tomb on Gallifrey, his mind remained active, usually manifesting itself within the Matrix, a repository of the minds of "all" the dead Time Lords of Gallifrey's past.

As "The Gallifrey Chronicles" represent the end of an era of sorts and the begining of a new one, a personal irony in this regard is that this novel is all that remains of my Dr. Who book collection due to Katrina.
The Gallifrey Chronicles is the last book of the Eigth Doctor's adventures and one would expect something great; something spectacular.
In order to understand all of the references to events that are mentioned in the Gallifrey Chronicles, you would have to have read maybe six or more other Doctor Who books, otherwise you feel lost when you read that the Doctor's daughter had died and the Doctor didn't remember it.

Before she is discovered there by a concerned Cardinal Braxiatel, Romana hears a voice speaking to her, offering a promise of future power and demanding that she keep this chance encounter a secret.
Its sole occupant is burned beyond recognition, his hands are broken, and he is missing his tongue, and worse yet, when Romana calls Braxiatel on Gallifrey to check on the ID of the TARDIS, the Cardinal learns that the vehicle is still on Gallifrey - this TARDIS comes from the Time Lords' future.
And naturally, Romana only has the best interests of Gallifrey and the Time Lords at heart...even if that means that the freedom to disagree with her policies is about to become a thing of the past.
