The trend in naming is to move towards common names that are unique throughout the world and that reflect the classification of the birds concerned.
The Rufous-tailed Moorhen is known as the Bush-hen (which helps to avoid wrong understanding of its relationships to Gallinula).
The name of Gallinula chloropus includes 'Common' to avoid any confusion that might arise from references to 'moorhens' in general.

A classic example in the debate on the link be- tween sex ratios and cooperative breeding is the Tas- martian Native Hen (Gallinula mortierii).
Ridpath (1972b) reported male-biased sex ratios among both adults (1.5 males per female) and chicks (2.8 males per female) in his study population, and an overall sex ratio of 1.22 males per female among 489 indi- viduals collected near his study area and sexed by dissection.

Gallinula nesiotis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into G.
Tristan Moorhen Gallinula nesiotis was endemic to Tristan da Cunha (to UK).
It was abundant up until 1852, but rare by 1873, and had become extinct by the end of the 19th century as a result of hunting, predation by introduced rats, cats and pigs, and habitat destruction by fire.

The accepted scientific name for the Mariana common moorhen is Gallinula cloropus guami Hartert, 1917 (02).
The subspecies is protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 U.S.C. 703-711 et seq.) under the name Gallinula chloropus (the Common Moorhen).
Brackney (17) found common gallinule (Gallinula chloropus) densities highest on deep marshes with robust emergent vegetation and a 50:50 ratio of cover to open water within the vegetation portion of Lake Erie marshes.

The Hawaiian common moorhen was first described in 1877 by Streets and named Gallinula sandvicensis, giving the synonym as Taxonomy - 1 (DRAFT) - Taxonomy Species MOORHEN, COMMON, HAWAIIAN Species Id ESIS101014 Date 14 MAR 96 Gallinula chloropus (05).
In 1944 Monroe's "Birds of Hawaii" (04) used the current name, Gallinula chloropus sandvicensis, and there is presently general agreement that the Hawaiian form is a subspecies of the North American common gallinule, Gallinula chloropus chloropus.
The species is protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act under the species name Gallinula chloropus (16 U.S.C. 703-711 et seq.; 50 CFR 10.13).
