Developmental biology - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-09)
Modern developmental biology studies the genetic control of cell growth, differentiation and "morphogenesis," which is the process that gives rise to tissues, organs and anatomy.
Embryology is a subfield, the study of organisms between the one-cell stage (generally, the zygote) and the end of the embryonic stage, which is not necessarily the beginning of free living.
The related field of evolutionary developmental biology was formed largely in the 1990s and is a synthesis of findings from molecular developmental biology and evolutionary biology which considers the diversity of organismal form in an evolutionary context.

Similarily, a deeper understanding of developmental biology can foster greater progress in the treatment of congenital disorders and diseases, e.g.

I have designed the laboratory section of this course so that it correlates with the lecture material, presenting you with a cohesive approach to the study of developmental biology such that concepts are mutually reinforced by the lectures and labs.
Although I have done my best to design labs that can be covered within a 3 hour time period, the reality is that organisms develop on their own timetables and real science is hard to do under such time constraints.
