Galveston is the county seat of Galveston County located along the Gulf Coast region in the U.S. state of Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area.
Galveston is the second-largest city in Galveston County after League City; League City surpassed Galveston between 2000 and 2005 [1].
In 1839, the City of Galveston adopted a charter and was incorporated by the Congress of the Republic of Texas.

GALVESTON - The great storm that came roaring out of the Gulf of Mexico 100 years ago, destroying this island city and assuring its place in history, deserves its due.
The most apparent of Galveston's efforts to prevent a repeat of 1900's devastation is the seawall, which today runs from just past Boddeker Drive on the east end to just past Cove View Boulevard on the west.
While Galveston received financial help from the county, state and federal governments, a large portion of the burden had to be carried by the city itself, at the expense of other projects.

Galveston grew on the strength of the port; cotton moved outward, and farming supplies and immigrants came in.
Following the war Galveston quickly recovered; northern troops were stationed in the city, and a depleted state demanded the trade goods denied by the blockade and the war effort.
Galveston acquired a coast guard station in 1897 which still operated in the 1990s and a small military base, Fort Crockett (1897-1957), but other cities such as Dallas acquired transcontinental rail connections and a growth in manufacturing establishments.
