  Tribes of Galway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The town was besieged and after the surrender of Galway in April 1652, the Tribes of the city had to face the confiscation of their property by the New Model Army.
The Galway Corporation was taken over in October 1654 by English Parlimentarians and, despite a measure of power during the reign of King Charles II (1660-1685) and the War of the Two Kings (1689-91), the Tribes had lost their power within the city.
Galway's urban elite enjoyed a measure of their power restored during the reign of the King Charles II (1660-1685) and his successor James II.

 Mayor of Galway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The office of Mayor of Galway was created by a charter issued by King Richard III in December 1484 at the solicitation of merchants from the city's leading families, known as the Tribes of Galway.
Although it survived the the turbulent 17th century, the massive corruption of the office led to its disestablishment in 1841, when Galway Corporation was relegated to the status of an Urban District Council, headed by a chairman.
Galway Corporation was abolished in 1841, not to be restored until 1937.

THE NEWLY refurbished and extended Galway Arts Centre, which cost a total of £550,000, was officially opened by the deputy mayor, Councillor Coogan on Friday October 2.
However, the Galway Corporation was approached and it agreed to step into the breach.
He thanked the Galway Corporation, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands for the funding received for the arts centre on Dominick Street.

THE CONTROVERSIAL proposal by the Galway Corporation to designate a section of Rahoon cemetery as a lawn cemetery is to be discussed at this Monday night's meeting of the Galway Corporation.
Speaking to the Galway Advertiser's Mary O'Connor when the issue first came to light some weeks ago, Mr Craughwell said he understood that if he put flowers on his son's grave they would be removed.
As outlined by the corporation in a notice dated November 12 1997, kerbstones, flowers, wreaths, trees, shrubs, stones and chippings are not permitted on top of the grave of a deceased person in the new sections.

Galway Corporation has tonight voted to reverse an earlier decision banning an incinerator being built on the outskirts of the city.
But it would be seven or eight years before a brick was laid in Galway, he said, and between now and then it might be possible through recycling and minimisation to remove the need for an incinerator.
The Galway For a Safe Environment Group said that it would still fight the incinerator at every step of the planning process and would make it a very hot election issue.
