THE GALWAY City Council is sceptical about funding the Pearse Stadium re-development project to the tune of £300,000 because of the history of the GAA closing its stadia off to other sports.
A two man deputation from the GAA spoke at Monday night's meeting of the city council, and in their presentation asked if the council would provide £100,000 a year for three years towards the £2.5 million project.
GAA president Joe McDonagh, and secretary of the county board Frank Burke presented the plans for the project to the city council, while chairperson of the Pearse Stadium Development Committee Tom Leonard looked on.

Galway clinched the Connacht title in Roscommon this afternoon, but their lack-lustre performance against a poor Leitrim side suggests that All Ireland glory may be beyond them this year.
Galway got off to a dream start when they were awarded a penalty in controversial circumstances after 13 minutes and Derek Savage calmly tucked the kick away to put them firmly in the driving seat.
Galway continued to punish Leitrim in the second half, notching scores with ease and eventually ran out emphatic victors, the 1-13 to 0-8 score flattering Leitrim.

Galway lined out with fourteen of the side who started against Meath in the All-Ireland final last September and during the second 35 minutes the All-Ireland 15th player - Tommy Joyce - made his appearance.
The much-feared Galway attack had to rely on frees by Padraic Joyce to keep them in touch with the Connacht champions, while at the other end the Roscommon scoring department, particularly Nigel Dineen, Gerry Lohan, Stephen Lohan and attacking-defender Paul Noone had the Galway defence strugging for survival.
By then Alan Kerins had been introduced to the Galway attack and he was only on the field a few minutes when he was judged to have scored a goal when Roscommon goalkeeper Derek Thompson was, according to the umpires, alleged to have allowed the ball cross the goal line.

RTÉ.ie Sport - GAA: Galway issue to be resolved
Galway's senior hurlers could yet find themselves playing in next summer's Munster Championship, despite refusing invitations from both the Munster and Leinster boards at last week's meeting of the Hurling Development Committee (HDC).
Other options to be discussed tonight include Galway playing their opening fixture on a home-and-away basis, with the winner to be decided by the aggregate score over the two legs.
While this solution would be unprecedented in GAA circles, it is one that may satisfy the stubborn Galway board, who as yet, have failed to embrace any of the HDC's proposals with open arms.
