The College name was changed to Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in January 1998 and is now a multi-campus regional institution catering for over 4,500 full-time and close to another 4,500 part-time students, a highly respected institution for the standard of its courses and the calibre of its graduates.
The Institute was one of the early Irish participants in various European Union (EU) student exchange programmes and under the current SOCRATES programme has a commitment to accepting around 160 European students and sending out about 100 each year.

An Irish lecturer from the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has beaten competition from physics teachers across Europe to win one of the European science teaching awards at this year’s Physics on Stage, an initiative of the seven organisations that make up the European Intergovernmental Research Organisation, EIROforum.
Tim Roe was the head of physical sciences at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) until he recently retired after 30 years of service.
This year’s Physics on Stage was held at ESTEC, ESA’s Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands from 8-15 November.

William Rafferty representing Institute of Technology Tallaght won the 2001 Intel Excellence in Electronics competition with a prize of £1000.
Second prize of £600 went to Niall McCurry representing Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology and third prize of £400 went to Paul Brady representing Dundalk Institute of Technology.
Each Institute of Technology held local competitions in February and the winner from each competition went on to the finals held in Blanchardstown Institute of Technology.
