Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) formerly Regional Technical College, Galway is an Institute of Technology based in Galway, Ireland with centers throughout County Galway and County Mayo.
In 1976 the institution became the first Regional Technical College to receive degree recognition, this was the Bachelor of Arts in Hotel and Catering Management programme which is still obtainable at the institution.
The institution offers a variety of courses in business, engineering, and science, and has recently expanded into agriculture and nursing.

The College name was changed to Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in January 1998 and is now a multi-campus regional institution catering for over 4,500 full-time and close to another 4,500 part-time students, a highly respected institution for the standard of its courses and the calibre of its graduates.
The primary aim of the Institute is to provide high quality educational programmes to students in order to prepare them for the future demands of the community in which they live and work.
The Institute was one of the early Irish participants in various European Union (EU) student exchange programmes and under the current SOCRATES programme has a commitment to accepting around 160 European students and sending out about 100 each year.

 Castlebar College upgrade
THE REDESIGNATION by the Minister for Education of the Regional Technical College, Galway to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology should result in large scale inward investment to Mayo as well as an upgrading internationally of the status of the institute.
It was proposed at a meeting in Galway by a member of the staff in Galway.
Richard Thorn, head of the Castlebar institute said they now had 500 full-time students at the St. Mary's centre while there were now some 700 people availing of the part-time courses.

John Scully, from Galway, and attending the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology took 3rd prize of €500.
Institute of Technology Blanchardstown is Ireland's newest Institute and 2002 was only their second year to enter the competition.

Tim Roe was the head of physical sciences at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) until he recently retired after 30 years of service.
An Irish lecturer from the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has beaten competition from physics teachers across Europe to win one of the European science teaching awards at this year’s Physics on Stage, an initiative of the seven organisations that make up the European Intergovernmental Research Organisation, EIROforum.
This year’s Physics on Stage was held at ESTEC, ESA’s Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands from 8-15 November.

The building is on the campus of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, but a spokeswoman for the management company said no students were among the people currently living there.
Nine people were treated in hospital in Galway after a fire at a block of flats on the outskirts of the city.
The eight adults and a child were suffering from shock and the effects of smoke inhalation.

The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) located in the Connemara region of Ireland, in collaboration with a local community development group, Connemarra West, established a two-year tertiary (postsecondary) program in funiture design and manufacturing.
GMIT created The Furniture College of Letterfrack in an attempt to bolster Ireland's floundering furniture manufacturing industry.
