The Gambell Sites have been classified by archaeologists as part of the maritime-oriented Thule tradition (also called Northern Maritime or Neo-Eskimo), that extended over an area of the Arctic from northeast Siberia to Greenland.
The Old Gambell and Seklowaghyag sites were removed from the National Register of Historic Places, but Miyowagh, Hillside, and Ayveghyaget were believed to have continuing research potential and therefore remain listed in the National Register.
Many Gambell residents feel that they are recovering their heritage and dispute the exclusivity of archaeologists to produce information about their past.
