A Gambian Giant Pouched Rat - native to Africa, transplant to the Keys - chills out in captivity after being trapped by a researcher a few weeks ago on Grassy Key.
The most recent Gambian rat study was completed in March and spearheaded by Neil D. Perry of Texas A & M University.
Perry reported that eight rats may have escaped from a pen of an exotic breeder on Grassy key around 1999, but wildlife services weren't aware of the situation until a resident saw the wild rats and contacted Fish & Wildlife in spring 2004.

The Gambian rat that tested positive for monkeypox was not Knapp's, which died and was cremated, officials said.

The only time I ever saw a rat the size of a cat it was on a lawn in Forest Hill in Toronto.
