  The New Yorker: Fact   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The dire or merely domestic outcomes of so many of her movies can be easily dismissed as the requirements of a less enlightened age, or as a sign of the ongoing bewilderment about how a truly “modern” woman’s story might conclude.
In the entire range of her movies, it is difficult to call up an image of her in a clinch or a kiss or an unembarrassed sexual situation: except for “Woman of the Year,” the 1942 film that followed “The Philadelphia Story” and forms nearly a genre in itself.
When movie projects were scarce, there were Broadway shows—she learned to sing, in a manner of speaking, for “Coco”—and gruelling national tours that no other star of her stature would have considered.

Gone are the days when a movie ticket cost a dime, popcorn a nickel and theatres had a single screen: This is the age of the multiplex.
Yet movie distributors are not exactly a powerless lot, likely to surrender the first time they are presented with hard choices by a theatre operator; nor are they reluctant to precipitate a showdown when they believe their rights are being infringed.
Even assuming that the Las Vegas movie market was, in some static sense, operating at capacity, the entry of a new competitor might, as the district court found, simply result in "the exit of some of the less attractive and less efficient theatres in Las Vegas." 712 F. Supp.

Gambit shows us two superbly developing stars, Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine -- and in restrospect, you realize from watching this fine movie that they had what it takes, even back in the 1960s.
Gambit is a marvelous film full of style as well as substance.

Michael Caine, at 6' 2" ft tall, is one of the tallest men in the movies.
(1966) with the main character having to talk to camera had the potential to be a disaster and was a success wholly down to Caine and his screen presence (and Jude Law with no beginning to his screen talent will attest to that fact by the appalling remake he appeared in in 2004);
