Welcome to Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador (French, Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Irish: Talamh an Éisc agus Labradóir, Latin: Terra Nova) was the tenth province to join the Canadian confederation.
Newfoundland received a colonial assembly in 1832, which was and still is referred to as the House of Assembly, after a fight led by reformers William Carson, Patrick Morris and John Kent.
Newfoundland's long-standing Labrador boundary dispute with Canada was resolved to the satisfaction of Newfoundland and Canada (but not Quebec, the province that bordered Labrador) with the ruling, on April 1, 1927 by the Imperial Privy Council.

 Outports: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage
During the age of sail, Newfoundland and Labrador outports were visited by ships from Europe and New England, while people a few miles from the coast in a farming community in Europe would have seen fewer travellers.
Prior to the 20th century, most Newfoundland and Labrador outports, with the exception of a few other larger centres, lived without local government and with infrequent contact with representatives of the British or Newfoundland governments.
The widespread feeling of decline in rural Newfoundland, which was matched in rural communities elsewhere in the world, reached a new level in 1992 when the Government of Canada placed a moratorium upon catching northern cod.

Greenspond, Newfoundland and Labrador - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By mid century it had become a prominent supply centre and clearing port for the Labrador fishery which led to the appointment of a collector of customs by the colonial government in 1838.
The laying of a submarine cable between Greenspond and the Newfoundland mainland in 1885 and the subsequent provision of a telegraph service greatly enhanced Greenspond's communication with the rest of Newfoundland and the outside world.
Throughout the 20th century the fishery remained the major economic enterprise of the people of Greenspond: a bait depot was established in 1946, a fresh-fish processing plant was built in 1957 and a smokehouse was opened in the 1970s.

Although Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans have fought with the forces of other nations and continue to distinguish themselves today in the Canadian Armed Forces, it is with a special kind of pride that we remember the exploits of that Regiment.

Newfoundland is now a province of Canada, comprising the sparsely populated coast of Labrador and the rugged triangular island of Newfoundland.
Newfoundland was actually discovered by John Cabot in 1497 and eventually became an English fishing station where, not surprisingly, settlement was actively discouraged until the 19th century.
Labrador, Newfoundlanders say, is “just a waste of space.” There was no work to the north, no future and no need to be there.

The History of Palaeoeskimo Archaeology in Newfoundland
The last one hundred and twenty years of palaeoeskimo research in Newfoundland has evolved, perhaps as all subject matter does, from an initial speculative stage to a level where data is accumulated and loosely interpreted, and consequently to a level where this information is synthesized under the auspices of more general theoretical frameworks.
Frederica De Laguna (1940) referred to the Dorset groups of Newfoundland in her analysis of soapstone vessels, concluding that the lack of suspension holes in the vessel technology was as result of an abundance of available firewood on the island which made it unnecessary to hang pots above a blubber lamp.
His primary objective was in determining how this Newfoundland contingent of Dorset groups fit in with the overall scheme of the Cape Dorset manifestations which had been identified in the Arctic regions of Hudson Bay, Baffin Island, Greenland, and in the sub-Arctic northern Labrador.
