IGN: Hands-on with the Game Boy Advance SP
When folded, it's nearly the same thickness as the original Game Boy Advance, and it's as "tall" as a GBA as well...but its width is nearly cut in half, making the thing way more portable than its older brother.
The Game Boy Advance SP's screen is very similar, if not darn near exactly the same as the LCD screen used in the original Game Boy Advance system.
To link the Game Boy Advance SP with e-Reader to the GameCube or another Game Boy Advance, players simply plug their cable into the link port at the top of the SP system...the link port built onto the e-Reader is not used.

  Game Boy Advance SP Review
Unlike the original Advance, the SP does not come with a headphone jack.
Now, considering that the SP manages to be a little smaller than the original Advance, I wouldn't have minded had they made it a little bigger in order to get the jack in there, but I guess when you design handheld devices, size is very important, especially with the circuitry.
Along with the Wavebird Wireless Controller, the Game Boy Advance SP is further proof that Nintendo is a formidable designer of difficult gadgets, taking tough problems such as wireless control and LCD lighting, problems that a world full of companies are trying to solve, and curing them with unspeakable ease.

GamesPaper Review: Game Boy Advance SP
Game Boy Advance SP Nintendo's Game Boy has been one of the biggest gaming successes ever, and the company have released several models over the years, from the basic Gameboy, to the Gameboy Colour, Gameboy Pocket, and more recently the Game Boy Advance.
One of the biggest criticisms levelled at the Game Boy Advance was the fact that the screen was nearly impossible to see properly in all but the best of lighting conditions, making playing GBA games not only uncomfortable, but simply not as enjoyable as it should have been.
The SP operates off a built-in battery, which is said to provide up to 18 hours (10 hours with the screen light switched on) play before needing a recharge which takes three hours, and offers much better performance than typical disposable AA batteries.

It introduced the Game Boy Micro and the DS Lite to offer smaller, slicker alternatives to the SP and the original DS, respectively.
And the SP retains the expansion port and compatibility with all the accessories of its predecessor, including link cables and wireless adapters for head-to-head play in certain games.
The tiny shoulder buttons are a little small and a bit awkward to use, and most annoying, the GBA SP still requires an adapter (such as this $10 Nintendo version) to use headphones.

Unfortunately, to use the Game Boy Advance SP with headphones, you're going to have to purchase an adapter separately (less than $5).
One cool feature that I discovered when using the SP with old original Game Boy games is that pressing these buttons changes the display from regular to wide screen format.

Game Changer SP :: Game Boy Advance :: Review :: DreamStation.cc
The Game Changer for Game Boy Advance SP from Gamester is a device that attaches to the bottom of the Game Boy Advance SP by plugging into the cartridge slot.
The Game Changer's on/off switch that turns the GBA SP on, since the GBA SP's on/off switch is covered once it is attached to the Game Changer, works well and I had no problems turning the system on and off.
Gamester has also designed the Game Changer to allow access to the volume control, power plug/headphone jack, and communications port even when the Game Boy Advance SP is inserted into the Game Changer.

As the world's smallest video-game platform, the Game Boy Advance SP is also the first to use a built-in rechargeable battery.
The cartridge port placement on the lower part of the console is fine for GBA games, since they are flush with the console body, but older Game Boy Color carts will stick out in a way that takes some getting used to.
The new Game Boy Advance SP works essentially the same way previous Game Boy Advance models have--and plays the same selection of games--but adds a number of thoughtful features to the design.

Geek.com Game Review: Game Boy Advance SP
I never really had a lot of interest in the original Game Boy--it wasn't in color, and that just plain annoyed me. So instead I picked up a bulky Sega Game Gear, which was color and had the added bonus of serving as a color TV with an add-on.
Another huge complaint GBA fans have always had of the Game Boy is the fact you need to play the games outside or directly under a lamp to see what the heck is going on.
The D-pad and A and B buttons are configured much like the original Game Boy, and the shoulder buttons are much tinier (located on the back of the case), but still manage to feel natural during play.

Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP (Platinum) Reviews. Video Game Consoles Reviews by CNET.
One can't argue with the success of the original Game Boy Advance, which has sold millions of units around the world.
The GameBoy Advance SP is available in several colors, including silvery Platinum, metallic blue Cobalt, Flame, and Onyx.
Since the SP is much narrower than the original model at 3.23 inches wide, the unit feels a little cramped at first.

UGO.com Games - Game Boy Advance SP review of Nintendo's newest Game Boy unit
The Game Boy Advance SP (buy now) (the SP stands for "special") is here, and if you weren't into pocket gaming before, there's never been a better time to get on board.
The Game Boy SP runs old Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles flawlessly, though the unit is clearly meant for the GBA titles and above.
On the audio front, the SP unfortunately doesn't have a standard headphone jack, so players will have to make do with the small speaker until an adapter is released that will allow players to listen to their games through the AC outlet.

Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP Console Reviews at Shopping.com
Despite being technically inferior to most of the competition (the Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear were both more advanced, color handheld consoles), the Game Boy and the numerous variations in the past 14 years have held their grounds with huge titles and that nice and cozy Nintendo name on the hardware.
Thanks to the inclusion of additions that have been begged for by Game Boy fans for years, the GBA SP is a dream piece of hardware, albeit one that should have come out 2 years ago when the GBA first saw release.
As with the Game Boy Advance classic, the GBA SP plays almost all (there are some very small exceptions that are more about unique cartridge design) Game Boy cartridges, from the original fl and white GB games (many of which are colorized), to the Game Boy Color titles.

Around the SP's back, you'll find the same Game Boy Game Link jack that came on the original, which means that you can go head-to-head with up to three other GBA users regardless of what model they're using, though an optional cable is required.
However, in all situations except for when we were using the device outside in direct sunlight, the front light made a big difference; the screen was brighter and much easier to view for long periods, reducing eyestrain.
However, the SP's battery doesn't endure for as long as those of its predecessor; Nintendo says that you can get up to 10 hours with illumination and 18 hours without before you have to recharge, and our tests confirmed those numbers.

The SP's light button, that previously turned the system's screen lights on and off, now toggles between two different brightness levels for the backlit screen.
The default "low light" setting is noticeably brighter than the old SP screen, and when you turn the brightest level up, you'll be stunned at just how dark the original SP appears.
Not to mention that the clamshell design of the SP helps protect the screen and the fact that the SP is $20 less than the Micro.

At first look, you might think the Game Boy Advance SP is a sleek travel alarm clock; when closed, it's just as tall and deep as the original GBA, but only half as wide.
The SP comes with a power adapter that recharges a built-in lithium battery; our informal tests found that it takes about four hours to fully charge (you can play it while it's plugged in and charging), and the battery lasts about 11 hours with the backlighting constantly on.
It is strange to say that the GBA SP is seen as the kiddiest of game machines when it possibly has the most sopisticated games of the lot.

If your Game Boy Advance SP will work when plugged in with the A/ Adapter, but will lose power after the AC Adapter is unplugged, please use the following troubleshooting steps.
Note: If the problem happens with only Game Boy Color or original Game Boy games (these games are more square-shaped and taller than Game Boy Advance games) when the light is red, this is due to these games requiring more power.
There is a chance that a malfunctioning AC adapter could supply power to the Game Boy Advance SP, allowing you to play it while it's plugged in, but not charge the battery.
