It is no secret that GDW has been financially stressed for quite some time.
GDW will be closing its doors on Feb 29th, 1996.
We will do our best to see that our game lines are continued with companies that will take to heart the needs of the gamers who have supported our lines for so long.

Game Designer's Workshop was originally a partnership, and later incorporated to become Game Designers' Workshop Inc. I was one of the junior partners, and a stockholder, eventually serving on the board of directors and as corporate secretary.
While at GDW, I wrote, co-wrote, or edited over 30 game products, and served as designer, editor, developer, typesetter, business machine trouble-shooter, and was in charge of the office soda machine.
After GDW went out of business in 1995, I went on unemployment for a short time and worked a succession of part-time jobs (including several seasons as a part time clerk for the IRS answering their 1-800-IRS-FORM number).

However, it is as a separate game that "Narvik should be judged - as a simulation of the 1940 German invasion of Norway.
Having said that, "Narvik" is an excellent game and a fair simulation of history to boot.

It's semi light-hearted inasmuch as the overall flavor and spirit of the game embraces all of the time-honored traditions of bad Sci-Fi movies.
The tactics are fairly simple, although the rules are not particularly well organized and actually getting going was something of a stop and go affair as we jumped back and forth between different sections of the rules.

There was a magazine game called The Blue Max on the same subject, but it's a supplement to Aces High from 3W, a much more complex game not to my tastes at all.
Rules are given for a campaign game, where you can use the same pilot from game to game, gaining experience points.
Simply designate some spaces close to the far side of the board as photography targets (say, front-line trenches - use pennies), and one plane as carrying photographic equipment that must fly at speed 1 in a straight line over the target spaces to get good photos.

Late last week I headed to Seattle for the 5th annual Game Designers Workshop, which is a group of game designers that focus on story in games.
Since I program games on a near-daily basis, it would be alot of fun to have gameplay based discussions with the real big shots of gaming.
The bulk of the game was done while Luasfilm Games was at Skywalker Ranch and the mansion is a parody of the building called "the Main House", most notably the library and the spiral staircase.
