Topic: Game Developers Choice Awards

  GameSpy.com - Gaming's Homepage
The game was nominated in six of the evening's nine categories and won three Game Developer Choice Awards, including overall Game of the Year.
The award was presented by last year's Lifetime Award recipient, Yuji Naka of Sonic Team, and accepted by Yokoi's surviving wife and children, with Yokoi's son delivering an acceptance speech to the only standing ovation of the evening.
Unlike the AIAS awards, however, the show favored a casual atmosphere over the glitz of last week's show -- there were no movie actors on hand to act as host or award presenters, or clunky script for the presenters to fumble around with (which probably turned out for the better).

The most memorable moment of the IGF awards, however, came during the grand prize speech, when one of the developers used the moment as a stage for a marriage proposal (thankfully, she said yes).
Other awards were given to Sheri Grener Ray for her work championing women game developers, and the Maverick Award to UK developers Blast Theory for their work mixing performance art with games and mobile technology.
As has been the case with many of the previous Game Developers Choice awards, the tone of the evening was fairly laid-back and focused on the developers and the awards, eschewing trappings such as celebrity presenters and cheesy skits that have hurt other shows.
