Spore (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spore is, at first glance, a "teleological evolution" game or god game: the player molds and guides a species across many generations, growing it from a single-celled organism into a more complex animal, until the species becomes intelligent.
The game was first revealed and demonstrated to the public during a speech on procedural generation at the 2005 Game Developers Conference (GDC).
In the Game Developers Conference presentation, the creature that Will Wright was presenting during the creature phase was based on his earlier cell creature (in having three legs, a tail, eyes and mouth in roughly the same positions) that he had evolved through gameplay.

Game Developers Conference - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally called the Computer Game Developers Conference, the first conference was organized in 1987 by Chris Crawford in his San Jose, California-area living room.
Crawford continued to give the conference keynote address for the first several years of the conference, including the famous "whip" speech in the early 1990s where he punctuated a point about game tuning and player involvement by cracking a bullwhip perilously close to the front row of the audience.
GDC also now includes the Serious Games Summit, first held in 2004, focusing on developing games for practical purposes, such as education, corporate training, military, and health care applications.

 Game Developers Conference 2006
It is the main global forum where programmers, artists, producers, game designers, audio professionals and others involved in the development of interactive games gather to exchange ideas, network, and shape the future of the industry.
The Game Developer Conference has grown from an informal gathering of about 25 developers in the living room of a notable game designer 17 years ago, to a week long conference for more than 12,000 industry insiders.
Initially the GDC was focused on computer games, but the industry has now diversified to the point that it includes any number of platforms, such as dedicated gaming consoles, handheld devices, cell phones, and PDAs.

 Game Developers Conference // GamesIndustry.biz
And eventually the grandparents are playing on the couch, playing some game on the couch, holding the joysticks and it was a crowd of like 20 people around the couch all screaming and cheering at the TV and having a great time.
I believe that the games industry is right at that precise point in time in that before and after transformation, before it was all about 3D, 3D graphics on the 4 by 3 screen, in HD it's going to be all about 16x9, those clear high definition visuals and movie theater quality surround.
So the developer and publisher sit down and they say, "What are we going to do about it, we've got to go catch up," so the budgets increase, the staff grew, more specialists got added like a lighting engineer, like a shader composer so that they could ratchet up and catch up.
