For Love of the Game is a novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Shaara, published posthumously in 1991.
With just two more games before the World Series, and Chapel's team, the Hawks, about to play against the New York Yankees, Chapel receives news from a sports reporter that the new owners of the team, the sons of the Old Man who had signed him years earlier, are preparing to trade him.
Chapel is determined that his last game will also be his greatest, even though, with all the young new players on the Hawks, the Yankees are a far superior team.

The game stinks and I don't want to be a part of it anymore." Billy can't stay to talk; he has to rush out the door of the Waldorf-Astoria into Central Park to search for the woman he loves almost as much as baseball.
Preoccupied by his memories of Jane and the eclipse of his masculine powers, Billy strides onto the hallowed sward of Yankee Stadium and begins to pitch a perfect game (that is, a game in which no opposing runner reaches base -- a supreme, and exceedingly rare, accomplishment).
During the game, director Sam Raimi -- a onetime cinema whiz kid best known for his "Evil Dead" indie horror films of the '80s -- mostly takes us away from the diamond into a retelling of Billy and Jane's relationship, staged as if it were a soft-rock video.

And so, many games scholars around the world are busy trying to get to the root of the invention of chess, the war game.
While it is possible that, in a moment of epiphany, the game of chess emerged, full-blown in a form recognizable to us as such, it is more prudent although far less exciting to assume, rather, that the idea of chess evolved out of one or more prior games played by people for thousands of years.
Several authors have examined the question of whether ancient games were derived from practices and methods utilized to divine the will of the gods and/or discern the future (Pascal Romaine; C.J. Gadd, Joseph Needham); or to express religious belief (Pavel Bidev; Peter Piccione).

Of course, the game is an allegory for Chapel’s life, and to me, there could be no better concept for a baseball movie—framing the events of a man’s life with the events of a single game.
Those of us who love baseball already understand the nuances of this seemingly simple game, but Raimi does a good job of making the psychological confrontation between pitcher and batter come to life for any viewer, partly by having Chapel mutter his inner monologue to himself so that we hear what he’s thinking.

For Love of the Game Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"For Love of the Game" is the latest valentine for America's favorite pastime, and the timing couldn't be better, with the baseball season currently in full swing.
To a certain degree, "For Love of the Game" shares some semblance to "Notting Hill", in which the ambiguities, frictions, and awkward moments of adult relationships are examined and amplified via the unlikely pairing of a normal person with a celebrity, and in this latest offering, with hilarious results.
Though "For Love of the Game" is plagued with a few weak spots, including a somewhat muted ending, overall, this is a film that has a little something for everyone-- the baseball fan, the moviegoer in search of an entertaining diversion, and the celluloid aficionado in search of an unconventionally-crafted film.

The movie’s a bit of an anachronism: an unapologetically sentimental, cliched love story in a cynical age of horror flicks and wisecracking crime capers.
The game scenes themselves are overwrought with excessive use of sound and slow motion, and while the film is relatively baseball-savvy, there’s plenty for diehard fans to find unrealistic.
Vin Scully and Steve Lyons, playing themselves as the Fox broadcast team, appear never to mention what the Red Sox did in their game (the scoreboard shows they lost, which means the Yankees clinch a tie), and fans watching on TV don’t seem to care about that either.

As the true story behind what games actually do to people over time continues to materialize, the subject is being broached more delicately by the media.
Games are such a compelling form of entertainment that can cause us to go to relative extremes in our everyday lives.
It's a chance for us to consider some of the moments in our lives as game players that made us feel strongly about something that, in the grand scheme of things, is probably pretty trivial.

For Love of the Game: (Basil Poledouris) At the time of this film's release, there was much attention paid to a fifteen minute promotional album of Poledouris' score floating about the secondary market.
In the piano solos of tracks four and nine, as well as the romantic orchestral themes of tracks two and eight, the spirit and personality of For Love of the Game are undeniably enticing.
But for Poledouris fans who were disappointed after the long wait for his return to the scoring stage with Mickey Blue Eyes earlier this year, For Love of the Game is a far superior score and a good purchase.

 For Love of the Game
For Love of the Game has a dual purpose: It aims both to acknowledge Costner’s vulnerability and build him back up to star status.
In For Love of the Game, Costner is Billy Chapel, a major league baseball pitcher at the end of a long and brilliant career.
For Love of the Game is structured as a series of flashbacks, triggered as Chapel thinks back from the Yankee Stadium dugout, and the message couldn’t be clearer if one of those meddlesome announcers spelled it out: His whole life has led up to this moment.

"For Love of the Game" stars Kevin Costner as Billy Chapel, an aging pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.
At Yankee Stadium for the last game of the season, Chapel takes the mound in what could very well be his last game ever.
Raimi has avoided the temptation to turn "For Love of the Game" into saccharine, deftly keeping the film's sweetness without letting it turn into plastic.

 For Love of the Game
For Love of the Game has a ruminative flashback structure: The conceit is that, as Billy plays what may be his final game, he thinks back on his life -- mostly the recent past having to do with the Preston character, Jane Aubrey.
Jane's character is similarly sketchy; she exists to throw Billy a curveball every now and then (that may or may not be a pun; she may actually be intended as a symbolic pitcher throwing relationship fastballs Billy can't hit).
For Love of the Game is painless, but it's also pompous and pious about baseball in a way that doesn't mean much to a non-fan like me. Also, I see that I've gotten almost to the end of the review without mentioning the director, Sam Raimi.
