  Game Tunnel
Game Tunnel has put together its list of the top 10 indie games this year, and it is sure to have a few gems that you probably haven't even heard.
Game Tunnel awarded the simulation game of the year award to Outpost Kaloki as it takes the SIM game genre back to its roots of fun with a game that even Will Wright would be proud of.

GameSpot's Best and Worst of 2004 - GameSpot
Having to choose just one as our 2004 Game of the Year was gut-wrenching, especially since so many of us feel so strongly about each and every one of the finalists.
It's the sort of game that appeals to those of us who love to spend our weekends hunkered down, playing games nonstop for hours on end, as well as to those of us who want to take a break from a busy week with a quick, casual playing session.
This can be attributed to the particulars of the game's excellent design, but is essentially due to how good of a job World of Warcraft does at drawing players into its setting and gameplay, and then keeping them there by offering tons of content to explore and hidden depth to discover.

2006 Strategy Game of the Year by Game Tunnel
This year's list boasts some very innovative strategy games including one of, if not the, best play-by-email games ever in Naked War; and The Odyssey: Winds of Athena, which offers game play that is both strategic and original.
Each game of DEFCON is divided into five rounds corresponding to defense condition alert levels, hence the title.
The mesh of game and game-world in Winds of Athena is nearly flawless.

Game of the Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the German Board game award see Spiel des Jahres.
Game of the Year is a distinction awarded by various magazines and websites to a deserving PC or console game.
Many publications will award a single "Game of the Year" to a single title that they feel represents the pinnacle of gaming achievement that year, as well as smaller awards (such as "Best Strategy Game", "Best Shooter", etc.) Publications awarding some form of Game of the Year include:

GameSpy's Game of the Year Awards - 2002
In past years, we've historically given out one award to our favorite PC multiplayer game of the year.
With all the next-gen consoles going online, this award has now expanded to cover all platforms, but this year's winner goes to the game everyone was playing on their PC this year: Battlefield: 1942.
Anyone could jump into a game and start shooting, and it wasn't too hard to learn the mechanics of driving a jeep or tank within minutes.

Slashdot | What Is Your Game of the Year?
Last year's response to our Game of the Year post was so enthusiastic that I thought it would be worthwhile to give it another go.
This year saw a rather violent shift in my gaming appetites, as I decided it was time to kick the World of Warcraft habit.Any game that required too much of my time was avoided like the plague. That being said, the Wii's Mario Galaxy turned out to be my perfect game this year.
Many games I have played recently really required a great deal of time to hone your skills to that "expert" level, and while that may be fine for a game with the scope of World of Warcraft, I shouldn't need that level of dedication for a simple platformer and Mario Galaxy delivers spectacularly.

Awards 2007: Game of the Year at GAME.co.uk
The Game of the Year, the one title that anyone who professes an interest in videogames simply must experience.
The inspired level design, original use of use of physics and momentum, and the character evident in every part of the game (right down to the Sentry Guns - which are like murderous metallic Care Bears) puts Portal leagues ahead of the competition.
In the game's demented artificial intelligence GLaDOS, Portal has given us one of the most memorable videogame characters of all time, while the incredibly minimalist storytelling tells you very little, and yet everything you need to know.

Stunningly beautiful and creative down to its very core, Okami is a very uncommon type of game and is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of its developer, Clover Studio, which sadly shuttered its doors later this year.
The result is an action game that simply makes most other action games look bad.
Gears of War is the game that actually fulfills those outlandish promises we've been hearing from the likes of Microsoft and Sony about how earth-shattering the so-called next-generation games will be.

System Shock is one of the landmarks in PC gaming history: a deep, first-person game that offers a vivid world and narrative, then lets you progress through combat, stealth, puzzles, or any combination of the three.
Irrational Games, staffed by some of the original System Shock team, has called Bioshock a “spiritual heir” to that classic, and it’s easy to see why.
The game also incorporates System Shock’s “hacking” mode, which allows users to solve puzzles (styled on the Water Works tile game) to bypass certain obstacles or gain bonuses.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition Review - Xbox
However, instead of offering the same game for a cheaper price and maybe a snazzier box, Bethesda is going one beyond and releasing the game with both of the PC expansions (which have never seen the light of day on the Xbox), Tribunal and Bloodmoon, along with the original game.
Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition is a great idea; it gives Xbox gamers a chance with something commonly reserved solely for PC gamers, the expansion pack, and offers it to them for a mere thirty bucks.
Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition is recommended for current Morrowind fans looking to prolong their quest (as you can port your character over from the original Morrowind) or for those who’ve been contemplating a trip to the huge land of Vvardenfell, but never got on the boat.

Game Tunnel's list of the Top 10 Independent Games of the Year covers gaming from a different angle, looking at the Independent and the Innovative.
The game play is excellent, the development of characters is fun, and the plot and background of the games are the most original I've ever seen in fantasy RPGs.
This game is sadly overlooked, and although independent it blows away the competition in terms of gameplay.

Game of the Year @ GameBanshee
In a year when several promising newcomers are making noise on the indie market, it might be hard for our readers to forgive us for returning to that “boring old pick” of Spiderweb Software.
Not only does the game show a lot of promise in setting, mechanics, and storytelling, but one could almost say that it sets the bar for the maturing independent market in terms of polish and production values.
To sweeten the deal, the game was surprisingly stable and well localized when compared to the many other European titles we’ve seen in recent years.

IGN.com presents The Best of 2006
Why It Rocked: 2006 was a great year for gaming, but the one game that was enjoyed by everyone across the board at IGN was Okami.
Why It Rocked: In a year of standout games for the next generation of consoles, Okami stubbornly clung to the aging generation of almost obsolete hardware.
Still, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is an amazing game, a must-play regardless of which system you hold allegiance to, and one of the best Nintendo games of all time, period.

I think that this is one of the most addictive games available on the Xbox 360, the graphics are stunning and the AI is very good, my one little gripe is if you commit a crime then all of the guards everywhere know you have done it.

It wasn't a perfect year, but CCP Games launched two new expansion packs in 2007 and continued to grow their game in a way unlike most other MMOs in the market.
The combination of the two expansions, steady growth and the way they've set their game up for a longevity few other MMOs appear to boast, made this a serious contender for Game of the Year.

Burnout 3, however, did show that racing games don’t need to feel too realistic and have fancy cars when crashing them and looking at the wreck can be as fun or more fun then racing.

The Game of the Year edition of the game requires you to download a patch in order to receive e-mails since the server of the developer was changed after the initial release of the game.
This is definitely a game to play with the lights out and one that will probably leave you feeling a little jittery at times.
The original game might be over a year old by now but it’s still innovative and risky compared to the standard point-and-click adventure game.

A game like Peggle is great and all, but to set it as a "Game of the Year" is pretty controversial.

And, while other games in the genre punish players for testing their limits and running risks, World of Warcraft encourages this kind of activity by not forcing players to lose experience when they fail.
That sort of can-do des ethic pervades all aspects of the game, allowing characters to make sificant progress by playing solo or in groups, giving characters an experience bonus for time they haven't spent online with the game, and so on.
