Fortress America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fortress America was the fourth of five games in the Gamemaster series.
Set in the 21st century, the board game begins with the premise that during the Cold War, the United States perfected so-called "Star Wars" technology and launched into orbit a satellite-based laser system capable of destroying intercontinental ballistic missiles (nuclear ICBM's) before impact.
Commercially, this was considered to be the third most successful board game in Milton Bradley's Gamemaster Series.

But what made Milton Bradley's Gamemaster Series so impressive was the quality of the components, the scale of which had not been seen in games before.
The Gamemaster Series games, while disappointing to Milton Bradley at the time, are fondly remembered by Generation X'ers like me, so much so that they are now hot collector's items.
The Gamemaster Series games filled a void in the game community, enduring both the scoffs of the old-time SPI and Avalon Hill wargamers, and the strange looks of the average Joes and Janes who eye the big, beautiful boxes with derision and sadly think games are only for kids.

Like the other games in the series, Shogun has very nice playing pieces, interesting game mechanics, a simple but elegant combat system and nicely written and easy to follow rules.
Combat is accomplished pretty much like the other games in the series; each troop type has a combat value and players take turns rolling dice for their various troop types trying to eliminate the other guys' forces.

This article highlights that particular heir of the Gamemaster Series: Hasbro's Avalon Hill line, a line of games from the company that bought both Milton Bradley and Avalon Hill (and initially needed a short while to figure out which it was more like).
The other four games are indubitably Gamemaster Series games in all but name, featuring the low complexity, dice rolling, and plastic pieces of their '80s kin.
But as a fan of the Gamemaster Series, the Hasbro/Avalon Hill releases are very satisfying to me—10 releases that are fun, have strong visual and tactical appeal, and generate lots of thoroughly enjoyable "light" strategizing.

But there were four other games in the series, each of which focused on some period of history and in one case a (very) speculative future.
While the other games in the series are strategic in nature, B&B is decidedly tactical.
