  Gamera
Gamera returned to Earth shortly afterwards, attacking a hydro-electric dam to feed off the energy; however, this time round he was a saviour of sorts, battling the monster Barugon which was rampaging through Japan (the brightness and heat of Barugon's rainbow beam attracted him).

Gamera engaged the Legion queen while the JSDF took out the swarm; nothing he did could penetrate Legion's forcefield and after taking heavy damage, he was forced to absorb a great deal of mana and redirect it into a beam, vapourising Legion.

American critics who praised this film's "ground-breaking" special effects apparently hadn't been watching too many contemporary Godzilla movies; though there are a few revolutionary shots here, for the most part, the production values are merely equal to (or actually lower than) the 1990s Toho films.
Sure, Gamera's fireballs are CGI, but he hardly ever uses them; besides, they don't quite compensate for the risible "takeoff" sequences and the silly puppet Gyaos.

Gamera: Guardian of the Universe has been out for some time (it was released in Japan in 1995, arriving on DVD here in the U.S. last year), and Judge Pinsky did a thorough job summing it up in his original review from last year.
(Gamera also gets a set of flipper wings, so he no longer has to use his wildly unstable flying saucer method of propulsion.) Presumably the producers were given a bigger budget to work with after the success of the initial Gamera revival film, and spent it well.

The new Gamera pictures carry on the idea that Gamera is here to protect earth, but the story lines are very mature compared to the original films, and the special effects are, at times, amazing.
Oldschool Gamera is definitely classic kaiju, it just tends to have some of the worst aspects of kaiju built into its roots: annoying little kids, illogical stories, bad set designs, and plots that seem just a skeleton to justify monster fights.
Gamera 3 is one of the best if not the best Kaiju movie I've seen and it beats the latest 'G' movies which are also very good but G3 is the best one I watched.

This would seem to indicate a sound commercial success; yet, in the Western world Gamera never enjoyed the popularity of Godzilla, a situation which has improved just a bit with the well-received releases of new Gamera movies, starting in 1995.
Indeed, the basic plots for Godzilla and Gamera movies are often interchangeable (with Gamera usually fighting its foe, loosing, retreating to the bottom of the sea and recuperating before winning the final battle).
However, without discussing the merits of individual movies featuring G or G, we can safely surmise that a giant reptile (dragon) destroying Tokyo or saving the Earth is less bizarre a concept than a giant flying turtle doing the same thing, especially when it's established that the turtle loves children.

The print used for the transfer, though, is all put devoid of scratches; furthermore, its the Japanese version of the film, not one which ADV tampered with, which means no ugly fl boxs with green English text inside to cover Japanese text found in the film and the original Japanese title sequence is present.
ADV went the extra step, however, by adding "Outtakes" and a short called 'Lake Texarkana Gamera.' Now first off, before anyone gets their hopes up, these "outtakes" are actually, intentional, "dubbing outtakes" that poke fun at some of the lines and situations in the film.
To end on a high note, ADV seems to have fixed the problem with Gamera: Guardian of the Universe's measly number of chapters by tripling the number to 24 for Gamera: Attack of Legion.
