gamma globulin - HighBeam Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Injections of gamma globulin are used to create a rapid but temporary immunity in patients who have been exposed to certain diseases.
Children who have been exposed to, but are not immunized against, measles and patients with hepatitis receive some protection from gamma globulin when it is administered during the incubation period of the infection.
The gamma globulin used for such purposes is extracted from blood plasma from a large, diverse adult population; the resulting mixture is thus likely to contain antibodies from individuals who had been exposed to the appropriate infections.

Gamma globulin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gamma globulins, or Ig's, are a class of proteins in the blood, identified by their position after serum protein electrophoresis.
Gamma globulin injections are sometimes given in an attempt to temporarily boost a patient's immunity against disease.
Gamma globulin infusions are also used to treat immunological diseases, such as immunological thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), a disease in which the platelets are being attacked by antibodies, leading to seriously low platelet counts.

(ATN) Gamma Globulin to Prevent Infections?
Gamma globulin is the component of human blood which contains antibodies -- certain proteins which are specially made by the body to fight particular infections.
But intramuscular gamma globulin, which has been available for decades, costs very little; it is safe, FDA approved, and is routinely used to protect against various infections.
I first tried gamma globulin because I did not see any hazard to the patient; and on the positive side, it has a number of antibodies, and might be of value in preventing infections in immune-deficient persons.

Howstuffworks "Gamma Globulin: A Profile of a Medical Tool"
Gamma globulin preparations are derived from the blood of a person or animal and contain antibodies made by that person or animal in response to invasion by harmful agents, such as bacteria and viruses.
Gamma globulin preparations are widely used for the prevention, modification, diagnosis, and treatment of many different kinds of infectious diseases.
For example, one symptom of multiple sclerosis is an elevated level of gamma globulin in the cerebrospinal fluid.

 Immune Globulin Information on Healthline
Immune globulin is a concentrated solution of antibodies, pooled from donated blood, which is sometimes given to cancer patients whose own immune systems are either not working or are suppressed as a side effect of treatment.
For example, immune globulin is given to bone marrow transplant recipients to prevent the development of severe bacterial infections while their own immune system is not functioning, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients (of the type whose antibody-producing cells are the malignant cells) are given immune globulin to prevent the recurrent infections these patients sometimes suffer.
While many pregnant women have been treated with immune globulin for different problems that have occurred during their pregnancy, since the method of action and specific effects on the fetus are not completely understood, pregnant women should avoid the use of immune globlulin unless it is clearly necessary.

Gamma Globulin will provide protection against Hepatitis A when administered before exposure or during the incubation period of the disease.
Immune serum globulin is recommended for all household contacts who have not already had Hepatitis A. Casual contacts (e.g., people who occasionally eat meals in the house of a person with hepatitis) even though related, are not candidates for Gamma Globulin.
The decision to administer Gamma Globulin as prophylaxis should be made based upon risk of exposure.

An increase in the percentage of alpha-2 globulin may be caused by systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, kidney disease, heart attack, or a long-term (chronic) infection (such as tuberculosis).

An increase in the percentage of gamma globulin may be caused by a chronic infection, an autoimmune disease, some types of leukemia, multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, liver disease, or Hodgkin's disease.

There are IgGs in the gamma globulin fraction along with the other gamma globulin proteins but only gamma globulin G is in the IgG fraction.
The gamma globulin fraction band of serum usually contains at least 3 of the 5 Immunoglobulin proteins which migrate together.
The gamma fraction may also contain traces of Immunoglobulin D and E. The gamma globulin fraction can then be further fractionated into its separate components.

 Intravenous Immune Globulin (IVIG) Therapy
Intravenous immune globulin, (i.e., IGIV or IVIG) is used to provide passive immunity or to alter the immune response by increasing the individual's antibody titer and antigen-antibody reaction potential.
Gamma globulins are specialized proteins (antibodies) made by the body's immune system.
Human intravenous immune globulin therapy for the treatment of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) when a rise in platelet count is required (e.g., prior to surgery, to control excessive bleeding, to defer or avoid a splenectomy, or to prevent bleeding post-splenectomy) is considered medically necessary.

Gamma globulin was shown to improve symptoms in 53% of the patients treated, compared with 32% of placebo injections.
89.5% of 57 patients treated with a gamma globulin treatment program remained in the treatment program because of relief of symptoms, and only four patients dropped out because there was no relief of symptoms or side effects.
It would appear that intramuscular gamma globulin treatment is efficacious in the treatment of CMS and that the average interval between treatments is three weeks.

Since they lack the cells that are responsible for producing gamma globulins, these patients have severe deficiencies of gamma globulins.
The antibodies are supplied in the form of gamma globulins (or immunoglobulins) and can be given directly into the blood stream “intravenously” (see chapter on Specific Medical Therapy).
Gamma globulin is particularly effective in preventing the spread of infections into the bloodstream and to deep body tissues or organs.

High doses of high titer gamma globulin are needed for severe infections.

I believe you are actually talking about gamma globulin, which is a different set of proteins that float around in the blood stream.
Gamma globulin has nothing to do with hemoglobin, which is the red cell mass that determines whether or not you are anemic.
The fact that your gamma globulin levels are remaining low is due either to the fact that you are donating too often and not recovering from it, or your body is not making these proteins, in which case you need to start looking for immune problems or something else.

NEJM -- The treatment of Kawasaki syndrome with intravenous gamma globulin
We compared the efficacy of intravenous gamma globulin plus aspirin with that of aspirin alone in reducing the frequency of coronary-artery abnormalities in children with acute Kawasaki syndrome in a multicenter, randomized trial.
Children randomly assigned to the gamma globulin group received intravenous gamma globulin, 400 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, for four consecutive days; both treatment groups received aspirin, 100 mg per kilogram per day, through the 14th day of illness, then 3 to 5 mg per kilogram per day.
We conclude that high-dose intravenous gamma globulin is safe and effective in reducing the prevalence of coronary-artery abnormalities when administered early in the course of Kawasaki syndrome.

Treatment of acute Kawasaki syndrome with a four-day course of intravenous gamma globulin, together with aspirin, has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in preventing coronary-artery lesions and reducing systemic inflammation.
We hypothesized that therapy with a single, very high dose of gamma globulin would be at least as effective as the standard regimen.
The children were assigned to receive gamma globulin either as a single infusion of 2 g per kilogram of body weight over 10 hours or as daily infusions of 400 mg per kilogram for four consecutive days.

Gamma globulin: A type of globulin in plasma that in electrically charged solutions exhibits slowest colloidal mobility after that of the alpha and beta globulins.
Gamma globulin : serum globulins that migrate in the gamma region on electrophoresis; gamma\-globulin at one time was used as a synonym for immunoglobulin, since most immunoglobulins are gamma globulins; however since some immunoglobulins exhibit an alpha or beta electrophoretic mobility, that usage is in decline.
