Gamow bag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The gamow bag was named after its inventor, Dr. Igor Gamow, son of George Gamow.
Gamow originally designed a predecessor to the gamow bag called "The Bubble" for high-altitude athletes which would produce more red blood cells to carry more oxygen to the muscles.
Gamow did not give up though and re-designed 'The Bubble' into a bag that could be used by high-altitude climbers.

Gamow is the son of the famed physicist George Gamow, a co-author of the Big Bang Theory and the first to propose the genetic code.
Gamow's mother, Rho, was a ballet dancer; and it was in his mother's footsteps that the son first followed, joining the National Ballet Company after finishing high school at age 17.
Gamow hardly confines himself to the classroom and lab: he is an irrepressible outdoorsman.

Gamow taught one of her first classes at CU; he was also her advisor and headed a student research group that she joined.
Gamow held her hands, caressed her face and kissed her, she wrote, while explaining that what he was proposing was "essentially the same as running off to Las Vegas together and not leaving the bed for a week."

Gamow also devised a similar but lighter gadget called the Gamow Bag as an emergency treatment for altitude sickness.
The idea was that the ill person would climb inside the coffin-sized Gamow Bag and someone else would use a foot pump to inflate the bag to simulate the air pressure of lower elevations.

The extent of the descent depends on the altitude at which the bag is used; as an example, at 4250m (14,000 ft), the inside of the bag is equivalent to 2100m (7,000 ft).
As in the Gamow® Bag, fresh air must be regularly pumped into the bag to prevent CO buildup.
The external, dangling pressure gauge on the Gamow Bag is vulnerable to wear/damage and subsequent leakage, something avoided in the Certec by having the pressure gauge set flush into the bag.

Pumping the bag full of air effectively increases the concentration of oxygen molecules, and, therefore, simulates a descent to lower altitude.
This lasts for up to 12 hours outside of the bag which should be enough time to walk them down to a lower altitude and allow for further acclimatization.

Igor Gamow constructed a practical portable inflatable pressure chamber that has been dubbed `the Gamow bag.' His bag is currently marketed in the U.S. by Portable Hyperbarics, Inc.for around U.S. It can also be rented in the U.S. or in Kathmandu.
The Gamow bag may replace oxygen as the treatment of last resort in acute mountain sickness.
Carrying the Gamow bag should be considered if you are traveling into a remote high altitude area where descent is difficult, or if you are in a large group where someone may hide or misinterpret their symptoms until they are seriously ill.

In his letter, Gamow challenges an April 11 story in the Boulder Daily Camera, in which staff writer Clint Talbott chronicles the claims of one of Gamow's alleged victims, Gretchen Hume, who publicly alleged in 1996 that she had been sexually assaulted by Gamow as an undergraduate in 1982.
Gamow, who began teaching at UCB in 1968, said he believes that CU officials decided at the last minute to not use Ruehlman's allegations against him during his September 2003 Privilege and Tenure Committee hearing, and that Ruehlman did not testify as planned.
Indicating that using Ruehlman's charges against Gamow in the dismissal process would have hurt the University's chances in her lawsuit against CU, Ruehlman's attorney, George Johnson, states in a legal brief that CU withdrew her claims "because it put uppermost its interest in preserving the opportunity to discredit [Ruehlman] in later court proceedings."

A Gamow Bag is a portable fabric hyperbaric chamber that can be inflated with a rafting-style foot pump to a pressure of about two psi (pounds per square inch).
While the bag is being pumped up, the patient inside often develops mild ear pressure and feels an increase in temperature due to the compression of air molecules within the enclosed space.
The unfortunate reality of Gamow Bags is that ultimately patients have to get out of them, and they're back at the same altitude where they began.

Another useful method to gain some time for the descent is the use of the Gamow Bag, a portable pressure chamber.
The patient is placed completely within the airtight chamber and by means of a foot-pump, the barometric pressure is raised inside the bag, effectively lowering the patient's altitude by 6-8000 ft. Constant pumping, about every 5 seconds is required to maintain the pressure and refresh the air.
The patient is usually kept in the bag for 2-3 hours before being rechecked, although a window in the top of the bag allows visual observation and communication.
