  Who's Gandhi?
Gandhi was powerfully attracted to them, as he was to the texts of the major religious traditions; and ironically it is in London that he was introduced to the Bhagavad Gita.
Gandhi conceived of his own life as a series of experiments to forge the use of satyagraha in such a manner as to make the oppressor and the oppressed alike recognize their common bonding and humanity: as he recognized, freedom is only freedom when it is indivisible.
Gandhi returned to India in early 1915, and was never to leave the country again except for a short trip that took him to Europe in 1931.

There were widespread acts of sabotage, and the government held Gandhi responsible for these acts of violence, suggesting that they were a deliberate act of Congress policy.
Gandhi resolutely denied these charges, but the deadlock was not to be resolved.
It has been suggested by other scholars that though Gandhi himself did not authorize violence, he had grown skeptical of the efficacy of non-violence, and that he had arrived at the point in his life where he was determined to see India attain independence during his lifetime.

In his defence, Gandhi argued that non-violence is not merely a weapon to be adopted or abandoned at random will, and that practitioners of non-violence are ethically bound to understand that shortcomings in the application of non-violence do not reflect upon any limitations inherent to non-violence itself.
Moreover, though it is commonplace to view Gandhi's adherence to non-violence as a measure of his alleged romanticism and failure to recognise the inescapably coercive nature of modern politics, it is telling that Gandhi didnot construe himself as an uncritical proselytiser on its behalf.
Gandhi's transformation is symbolised in the changes in his attire — from a besuited lawyer to wearing rough prison garb to a simple cotton tunic on his departure for India in 1914 — as shown in the exhibition.
