		Gangelt Castle lies in the town of Gangelt, north of the Dutch town of Brunssum.
		In 1484 the castle and town of Gangelt were destroyed by fire.
		The castle was rebuilt in 1511 by a knight; Gotart von Hanxler.

		Gangelt was in the 13th century a possession of the Lords of Heinsberg.
		The oldest seal, which dates from the late 13th century, thus shows the double-tailed lion of the Lords of Heinsberg with a bend between its paws, probably to distinguish the seal from the seal of the city of Heinsberg.
		In 1484 Gangelt and the rest of Heinsberg became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich.

		Gangelt was first mentioned in 827 and later belonged to the duchy of Heinsberg.
		It was sold in 1378 to the earl of Brabant and came back to Heinsberg in 1420, in 1484 to the duchy of Jülich.
