While hagiographical in nature, the Gangoji record does give the reader a strong feeling that there was resilient opposition to the importation of a foreign religion.
The Gangoji record lends evidence that this reconstruction of history at Temmu's court may have been something encouraged by the throne.
The Gangoji record is included because it is mainly concerned with the history of the temple, the importation of Buddhism, and the court, while later temple records tend to been more concerned about supernatural events surrounding the temple.

It will be the first time the Asian neighbors have worked together on a full-scale cultural heritage repair, the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday.
The 25 members of the combined team, led by Akira Yamauchi of Japan's Gangoji Institute for Research of Cultural Property, will repair the mural at Tongdo Temple in the city of Yangsan in South Gyeongsang province.
Yamauchi, who is in charge of cultural heritage restoration at the Gangoji Institute, proposed the restoration of the mural two years ago after he discovered the color was damaged and the 4-inch-thick clay on which it was painted was cracking and flaking.

Also coincidental with the development of esotericism was a trend in sculpture toward the carving of Votive Statues out of single blocks of wood, their surfaces left unadorned with paint or lacquer in deference to the inherent sanctity of the sacred tree (shimboku).
The principal examples of this "plain wood" style are the Yakushi figures at Gangoji (early 9th century) and at Jingoji (ca 783).
By the end of the 10th century, esoteric Buddhism gave way to Pure Land faith and practice.

Dark wooden slats along doors, circular ceramic tile roofs, tiny alley blocks; really showed how old Nara is. This quiet area away from the lights of the shops was dotted with dozens of small temples and shrines.
We stopped to see Gangoji, the first Buddhist temple to come to Japan (originally built in Asuka, Nara in 588 ad, it was moved to Nara city in 710ad).
Maybe because it was Dec. 30, so close to New Years, or because it was only 10 am, Mike & I were the sole toursts at this World heritage site.
