 Animefringe: June 2005 - Features - Gankutsuou
The Paris of the anime is nothing short of psychedelic, and the dual scenes involve five story mechs instead of a pair of sturdy pistols.
Gankutsuou puts that search in the background and concentrates on young Albert and how he deals with a world crumbling from The Count's actions.
The anime was limited to 24 episodes, which seems like the reason that GONZO opted to cut most of the intricacies of the plot out of the anime.

Gankutsuou, the latest effort from legendary director of Blue Submarine No. 6 and the Last Renaissance segment from The Animatrix, is without a doubt one of the finest anime series ever made and probably the best thing released this year.
But, neither of those do what Gankutsuou does, which is successfully marry the long-standing anime tradition of being an over-the-top visual spectacle with the respectability and maturity of something you’d see on PBS.
Simply put, Gankutsuou is a very special show that will appeal to anyone with a refined palette and an appreciation for art.

If anything, this series does a superb job of conveying the sheer enormity of the intrigue here, and between mention of supernatural powers and measureless spaceborne riches, one can't help but wonder how the inevitable confrontation will turn out.
As seen in prior episodes, this title uses plenty of mesmerizing optical illusions to convey a sense of vastness, but in addition to this, it's quite amazing to see the depth of attention given to tiny details, such as the accurate French wording within the Count's invitation.

Just plug in "Gankutsuou" into google and see the pictures of the blue-skinned, elf-eared Count (also known to me fondly now as "Hakeshaku", given all the times Albert has, delighted, called out his title), and you'll see why he's not particularly handsome.
Their storytelling is more traditional (watch "Last Exile" and "Samurai 7"), and you'll definitely find they are plot driven, not character driven like BONES is. This is the same for "Gankutsuou"; it doesn't deviate from the plot much in order to develop characters and what not.
Each of the characters hold their own charm - some are quite, some are these sexy women who are just...uhhhh, some are these guys who are smart as hell, others are supporting cast, all witty and intelligent and so beautiful in their humanity.
