A gantlet track (in British and Australian English: gauntlet, or gauntleted, track) refers to the situation where tracks converge onto a single roadbed and are interlaced to pass through a narrow passage such as a cut, bridge, or tunnel.
Gantlet track is typically used for short stretches of track where it is cheaper to provide extra rails than to provide switches and reduce the line to single track.

Stub switches are used primarily on (A railroad track (or its width) narrower than the standard 56.5 inches) narrow gauge lines and (A railway line connected to a trunk line) branch lines where the relative flexibility of the lighter rails makes this practical.
A derailer can consist of a single switch point installed in a track which can be pulled away from the rail to derail any stray (A wheeled vehicle adapted to the rails of railroad) railroad cars which would otherwise roll onto and obstruct a main line and cause a more serious accident.
Gantlet tracks are commonly used when a rail line's capacity is increased with the addition of an additional track, but cost or other factors prevent the widening of the bridges.

§ 140. gauntlet / gantlet. 3. Word Choice. The American Heritage Book of English Usage. 1996
If you are not sure whether you should throw down the gantlet or the gauntlet, don’t throw in the towel.
There are two words spelled gauntlet and both have gantlet as a spelling variant, so you can’t go wrong.
The gantlet variant of this second gauntlet has given birth to the railroad term gantlet, which is a section of track designed so that one rail of each track is inside the rails of the other to allow trains on separate tracks to pass through a very narrow space.

 New England's Railroad "Arches"
One major difference between early New England railroads and those built later, or elsewhere in the country, was that the alignment often passed near or through the center of an established town.
Where only one street needed to pass over, the arch would be less than 100' long, depending on the width of the road and the difference in elevation.
And in cases like Salem and Newburyport, where a single track arch (using gantlet track in Newburyport's case) separated the passenger station from the engine terminal and coach yard, they provide an interesting operating focus.
