Gantry robot construction and drive mechanism
We provide a cantilever gantry robot construction having the conventional components of a pair of elongated substantially spaced parallel rail means, bridge means spanning the rail means and movable relative to the rail means and robot means mounted on the bridge means and movable relative to the bridge means.
Robot means 80 is comprised of a fixed longitudinal support 82 which engages the bridge 60 and provides a fixed support which allows the robot head 84 to move up and down.
Robot means 130 is similar to that of the prior art in that it is comprised of a longitudinal support 132 and a robot head 134.

 Portable gantry robot
The robot is carried on rails that are integral with the transporter and identical in size to the displaceable rail sections.
Once the robot's transfer is complete, the transfer rail section 96 automatically unlocks, the transporter 94 moves away from the overhead rail system 92 and the displaceable rail section 90 simultaneously relocates to its normal position in the overhead rail system 92.
An empty robotic transport 104 aligns and displaces a rail section 100 and the robot 110 is moved onto the transfer rail section 108 of the transporter 104 after which the transfer rail section 108 is unlocked and the lift 106 is lowered.

 Michigan FACE Report No. 01MI002
All robot and HIMM controls, indicators and displays were located outside the HIMM on a work platform that is used by the operator to gain access to the mold area during semi-automatic operation.
The robot arm then lifts the part over the HIMM and moves in the opposite direction along the gantry frame to the delivery location, dropping the part to a conveyor for further handling by an operator.
Safeguarding of the restricted space (maximum area of robot movement with part) would be required by the ANSI standard and must: (1) prevent the operator from being within the space during automatic robot operation or, (2) stop the robot’s motion while any part of an operator’s body is within the space.

From Stodgy to Speedy: Advances in Gantry Robots. . . . by Bennett Brumson - Robotics Online   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Through the mid 1990's, gantry robots were considered slow, inefficient and inflexible--the fl sheep of the robotic family.
Gantry robots have managed to cast off their stodgy image in part by becoming speedier.
C and D's gantries are from their GS series and range in capacity from 110 kilograms to 900 kilograms.

 Bambooweb: Industrial robot
The most commonly used robot configurations for industrial automation, include articulated robots (the original, and most common), SCARA robots and gantry robots (aka Cartesian Coordinate robots, or x-y-z robots).
Other industrial robots are much more flexible as to the orientation of the object on which they are operating or even the task that has to be performed on the object itself, which the robot may even need to identify.
This allowed the robot to accurately follow arbitrary paths in space and widened the potential use of the robot to more sophisticated applications such as assembly and arc welding.

 Robots tend to their machines
Robots continue to push the envelope of productivity as the most efficient way of achieving untended production, whether servicing one machine or a number of machines, stations, or operations.
Traditional ways of looking at robots typically refer to those that are dedicated to the machine tool (Class 1), robots that travel on linear gantry tracks to load/unload one or more machines (Class 2); pedestal robots that load/unload one machine or several machines arrayed in cells (Class 3).
Pedestal robots require that the machines they service be positioned in radial fashion within the robot’s range of operation (think of an apple with the core removed).

 Robot Basics
Typically when someone refers to a gantry robot, what they really mean is a robot that hangs upside down and travels along either an 'X' or 'X' / 'Y' path to get to its pickup/putdown points.
If the beam that the robot is mounted on were also to travel the robot would be capable of 'Y' directional travel as well as 'X'.

Edmunds Gages - Orbiting Scroll Gaging Station
With manufacturing cells serviced by a central robot becoming more common in factories, many of our customers have approached us with the following measurement challenge: develop a gaging system that will inspect the parts for a critical feature or two after the machining operation and keep the machining process under control at the same time.
The time it takes to measure a part is generally significantly faster than the machining process, allowing the robot to load the gage, measure the part, unload the part from the gage and deposit it accordingly, before the next part is cut in the machine tool.
The robot controller provides an electronic signal that the grippers are free of the part.

Gantry robot: Used for pick and place work, application of sealant, assembly operations, handling machine tools and arc welding.
Its major components are a teleoperated mobile robot for deploying sensor and sampling payloads, a mapper for creating photorealistic 3D models of the building interior, a coreborer for cutting and retrieving samples of structural materials, and a suite of radiation and other environmental sensors.
That is, the robot must be able to walk on rough terrain in a harsh environment, receive instructions from remote operators about where to go next, and reach those commanded goals autonomously.

 material handling application for robots
A robot is normally designed to pick up a part in the same attitude and position each time; therefore proper part preparation for robot handling is required.
A machine-mounted robot is designed to swivel its arm to load a part for one machine operation, then set the part down and repick it at a different orientation for the next operation.
Robots may not be justified when parts require extremely close tolerances that are beyond the accuracy of the robots.

 Gantry Robot Device Module
The standard gantry robot module is designed to control a five or six degree-of- freedom gantry robot which consists of three mutually perpendicular linear joints and a two or three degree-of-freedom revolute wrist.
The robot option word also determines whether software limits on motor motion (in addition to the standard limits on joint motion) are to be used.
The gantry robot module requires that joints 4, 5, and 6 be designed such that the axis of rotation of all three joints intersect at a single point.

Six Sigma methodology to improve ship and boat welding
Tracking and inspecting welds can be performed by equipment ranging from large gantry systems traversing panel lines half a football field long to small, portable robots that can be used for a variety of applications.
The panel then is moved under a large gantry, where laser vision is used to guide the welding system, so the stiffener to panel weld joint is followed correctly.
The advantage of using the portable robot during welding lies primarily in its ability to be programmed to accommodate non-linear joint issues and to minimize the need to locate the track exactly.

Furthermore, the rigidity of the robot frame is also very high in the vertical axis and the combination of the rotation motions assures a high compliance in the horizontal plane, facts very important in an assembly task.
Usually the gantry robots are slower in acceleration and speed because of their large masses.
