Gao Lishi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gao Lishi (高力士) (684-762) was a eunuch official during Emperor Xuanzong of Tang China's reign, reaching high ranks like Biaoqi Grand General (驃騎大將軍) and Jinkai Fu Yitong Sansi (進開府儀同三司).
Gao introduced Yang Guifei to Xuanzong, and was with her when the Imperial army (blaming her and her family for the Anshi Rebellion) demanded her death.
It is unknown whether she hanged herself, asked Gao to do it to spare herself the army's execution, or if he took it upon himself to kill her (for pity, duty, or otherwise).

Yang Guifei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Three years after Emperor Xuanzong's wife Wu Huifei (武惠妃) died in 737, the highly-placed eunuch advisor Gao Lishi arranged for Xuanzong to meet Yang in Xingwen Fountain Palace (幸溫泉宮).
The emperor then made Yang divorce her husband the prince, and become a nun with the sobriquet Taizhen (太真 "Utmost Truth") living in Taizhen Palace.
Rather than turn herself over to them, Yang (then 38) hanged herself or was hanged by Gao Lishi.

Emperor Gao Zhong of the Tang Dynasty always used two sets of chopsticks and spoons when he dined; one set for taking the dishes from the plates, and the other for eating.
Emperor Gao Zhong, therefore, used two sets of cutlery to preserve the cleanliness of the food, and pioneered the use of communal chopsticks for common use.
Gao Lishi took advantage of the opportunity and told Lady Yang that in Li Bai's poem he compared her to Zhao Feiyan of the Han Dynasty, which was an insult to her.

Historically, there were many eunuchs whose influence cost rulers their states.
Shu Diao of the State of Qi undermined the hegemonist Duke Huan of Qi, Zhao Gao cost Qin its empire, Zhang Rang hastened the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Gao LiShi's misguidance cost Tang XuanZong his throne, and Wang Zhen caused Ming's emperor YingZong to be captured by the Mongols.
Though most eunuchs received some education, their castrated bodies meant their social status were far below those of scholars, and they were not allowed to become officials anyway.
