gap junction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Gap Junctions serve as a communication portholes to the rest of the body.
The gap junctions are not actually the physical proteins that serve as the "pipes".
The gap junction's channels only allow for the passage of molecules underneath 300 MW (a unit of measurement) to pass through.

Gap junction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In vertebrates, gap junction hemichannels are primarily homo- or hetero-hexamers of connexin proteins.
Gap junctions formed from two identical hemichannels are called homotypic, while those with differing hemichannels are heterotypic.
Gap junctions are particularly important in the cardiac muscle: the signal to contract is passed efficiently through the gap junctions, allowing the heart muscle cells to contract in tandem.

 Webvision: Horizontal Cells
Gap junctions are formed only between neighboring horizontal cells of the same physiological type as shown in figure 13a, b.
The conductance of the gap junctions between horizontal cells and therefore, dye coupling, is influenced by the intracellular and extracellular milieu and by chemicals such as dopamine, retinoic acid, nitric oxide or hydrogen ions that are released by other retinal cells (see later section).
The gap junctions between horizontal cells are highly permeable to small ions and therefore, serve as low-resistance pathways for electrical signals to spread laterally within the horizontal cell layer.

Adult Human Stem Cells & Cell-to-Cell Communication in Human Cancer
The basic hypothesis of the Trosko/ Chang lab is that the reversible inhibition of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) by endogenous or exogenous tumor promoters is responsible for the tumor promotion phase of carcinogenesis and that stable down regulation of GJIC is responsible for the progression or malignant/metastasic phase of carcinogenesis.
Gap junctional intercellular communication is a biological process found only in multi-cellular organisms.
It is interesting to note that toti-potent stem cells do not have expressed gap junctions, nor do several human pluri-potent stem cells (kidney, breast).

Expression of Gap Junction Channels in Communication-Incompetent Cells After Stable Transfection with cDNA Encoding ...
The gene family encoding gap junction proteins (connexins) consists of several known members, and multiple connexins are frequently coexpressed by coupled cells.
Functional gap junction channels were still expressed after 19 passages of the cells, indicating stable transfection.
When junctional conductance was rendered reversibly low by exposing the cells to agents that uncouple other cell types, currents through single gap junction channels could be observed.

Gap junction definition - Medical Dictionary definitions of popular medical terms easily defined on MedTerms
Gap junction: An organized collections of protein channels in cell membranes that allows ions and small molecules to pass between adjacent cells.
Gap junctions exist in almost all cell types., some exceptions being skeletal muscle, red blood cells and circulating blood lymphocytes.
The size and number of gap junctions per cell can change, depending on such factors as the point in the cell cycle and exposure of the cell to environmental stress.

NMDA receptors regulate developmental gap junction uncoupling via CREB signaling - Nature Neuroscience
Signaling through gap junctions (electrical synapses) is important in the development of the mammalian central nervous system.
Both developmental gap junction uncoupling and Cx36 downregulation are prevented by the blockade of NMDA glutamate receptors, action potentials and the calcium–cyclic AMP response element binding protein (CREB), and are accelerated by CREB overexpression.
Developmental gap junction uncoupling and Cx36 downregulation are not affected by blockade of non-NMDA glutamate receptors, and do not occur in hypothalamic neurons from NMDA receptor subunit 1 (NMDAR1) knockout mice.

 Gap Junction Defects
It targets Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness (KID) Syndrome and the role of gap junctions in cell signaling in the affected tissues, the epidermis, cornea and inner ear.
Their research revealed that KID is caused by autosomal dominant mutations in the gene encoding the gap junction protein connexin-26 (Cx26).
The results demonstrate that mutant Cx26 cannot form gap junction plaques at the cell membranes or impairs the function of gap junction channels.

 Rectifying Gap Junction
This membrane mechanism must somehow be wrenched out of its normal context of a channel between the inside and outside of a point on a section so that it can represent a channel between the insides of two sections.
The extracellular mechanism for the gap section is a key idea in this exercise since it gives us a non-trivial extracellular node (without an extracellular mechanism, the outside voltage next to the membrane is defined to be 0).
In hoc one would manage such simulations by writing a "GapJunction" template that manages a gap section with an rgap and extracellular mechanism along with a LinearMechanism instance to connect the gap junction to the desired locations.
