  Gaping Gill
Gaping Gill is a famous pothole on the limestone moors flanking Ingleborough just above Clapdale and the village of Clapham in the "Three Peaks" area of the Yorkshire Dales.
Situated at the bottom of a large crater, Gaping Gill is a yawning abyss which engulfs Fell Beck, the stream crashing down into a cathedral sized main chamber in what is probably Britain's highest unbroken waterfall.
At 365ft deep the main shaft and main chamber of Gaping Gill are obviously extremely dangerous, and their exploration is usually available only to experienced potholers.

In that publication, as well as apposite illustrations and a sparse, but adequate, commentary, a series of small outline surveys showing the limits of the known cave over a sequence of, years made clear the achievements of successive generations of cavers.
How much more graphically explicit would have been the same approach to Gaping Gill and Ingleborough Cave, showing the narrowing gap between them.
As it is, the publishers have lived down to the standard of the rest of the book by including just two surveys: one of Gaping Gill in 1909, and one which is essentially the same outline as in Northern Caves Vol.

Newsvine - Titan Shaft: New Claimant for Title of Britain's Deepest Cave
English caver Dave Nixon has established that a recently discovered cave room, called Titan Shaft, is the deepest in England, exceeding the depth of the previous record holder – Gaping Gill in the Yorkshire Dales – by nearly 200 feet.
After reading in 1992 an account from 1793 about a network of caves beyond a well-known system called the Speedwell System, Nixon realized that a vast amount of passage was not being explored by modern cavers – presumably because it had been cutoff by rockfall in the time since the 18th century article was written.
In fact, say proponents of the formerly deepest cave, Gaping Gill, the fact that Titan is highly ‘technical’ detracts from the ability of the general public to enjoy it.
