Gara Garayev's 85th Jubilee was commemorated with a State Concert at the Opera and Ballet Theatre on February 6, 2003.
Gara Garayev (1918-1982), [spelled Kara Karayev via Russian] was one of the most prominent figures in Azerbaijani music.
Garayev led the school of Azerbaijani composition after Hajibeyov's death, and within a short period of time, brought it to its highest level during the 20th century.

Composer Gara Garayev had been chosen to write the film score for the documentary, "A Story About the Oil-Workers of the Caspian Sea." The setting was Oil Rocks, an oil workers' small settlement of workshops and dormitories built up on trestles and piers out over the Caspian.
Garayev in the 1970s, recalled how their teacher used to say, "I don't want pygmies, I need giants!" and thus inspired many of his students to excel so that they could go on and establish their reputations in music.
Garayev's visit to the U.S. turned out to be one of the turning points in his life.

Garayev is no soft touch; much of this music is shudderingly dark and tragically tinted with the presence of the turbulence of battle and the searing acid of loss.
Garayev wrote the 1952 ballet The Seven Beauties and there are three symphonies and 24 preludes for solo piano.
Garayev has also written three symphonies, a violin concerto, various orchestral tone poems, chamber and instrumental pieces as well as 24 preludes for solo piano.

Garayev's future works had less tendency of being as "sweet" as his earlier ballets - "Seven Beauties" and "Path of Thunder." And this would put him in trouble back home.

The festival program concluded with Garayev's cantata, "The Song of the Heart," the text of which had been written by Azerbaijan's poet Rasul Reza.
His own son, Faraj Garayev (1943-) was among them.

In No. 23 Garayev introduces a bluesy-cakewalk (had Garayev heard Kapustin on one of his USSR tours) with some unambiguous dissonance.
While Garayev largely abjures orientalisms Rzayev makes free use of the mugam style weaving it with threads of the sinister, the pastoral and the peremptorily jazzy.
Recording quality varies from the stuffy heat of the Scriabin to the throaty forward intensity of the Garayev and Rzayev to the tape-impaired cyclical damage of the end of the feral Prokofiev-like tumult of the Hajibeyov (only the last minute or so) to the natural sturdy clarity of the Hasanov.
