Garapan is the largest village and the center of the tourism industry on the island of Saipan, which is a part of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).
It is located on Saipan’s west coast and is home to the majority of the island’s major hotels and the American Memorial Park, which honors American soldiers who died during the Battle of Saipan.
Garapan village is also known for its problems with prostitution.

As promised, the topic for this week is going to be the Garapan pedestrian mall, which is currently being built on 3rd street.
If the guests decided to walk from their hotel to DFS or the Joeten complex, they would no doubt be solicited at least a half a dozen times for massages, nightclubs or other activities we have been trying to crack down on.
The Garapan pedestrian mall is being done properly, and will be very attractive when it is finished, now let's just make sure that it has the kind of businesses that will turn it into the tourist and pedestrian center we all want it to be.

Surveillance cameras have been strategically installed on every street around Western Garapan to strengthen security efforts in protecting tourists from illegal activities in the area such as prostitution, gambling, and purse snatching, however, the cameras are not proving as effective as they should be.
During Thursday night’s operation on suspected illegal foreign workers in Garapan, Benavente said they used the cameras, but he noticed the cameras were switching from color to fl and white and sometimes just shining brightly.
He said the cameras are designed to help authorities come up with solid evidence to back up their claim against persons suspected of doing illegal activities in the area and are designed to work and monitor 24 hours a day, particularly the infamous Hotel Street.

I first stayed at the Paradise Hotel on Middle Road but it was too isolated for my taste and I moved to the Micro Beach Hotel, across the street from the Hyatt in the center of Garapan.

We drove our Hyundai north past Garapan, and then along the coast past Tanapag, the scene of what has been described as the most intense and fanatical battle of WWII, and we continued just past the Hotel Nikko.

During World War II, the U.S. Marines landed on June 15, 1944, on the beaches of the southwestern side of the island, and spent more than three weeks in hard fighting to secure it in the battle of Saipan.
This engagement was dramatized in John Woo's 2002 film "Windtalkers." Garapan is the largest village and the center of the tourism industry on the island.
The CNMI attained U.S. Flag Territory status in November, 1986, and US Citizenship was conferred on those born in the Northern Marianas.

THE Department of Public Works says it is now going to prohibit “sleazy joints and fly-by-night businesses” from operating in western Garapan pursuant to the Saipan zoning law which, according to a recent attorney general’s legal opinion, “is still in force,” Variety learned.
“We wanted to know if western Garapan could be ‘zoned’ to stop and prevent night clubs from operating, without us violating any law, and the attorney general’s opinion said the law allowing that is still in effect,” Reyes told Variety.
But he said DPW has yet to fully assess how it is going to ban “sleazy joints” in Garapan, especially those that are already in operation.
