Eileach, or more properly Aileach, is variously translated as a "mound " or "stony place," and is certainly connected with the obsolete word Al, a stone.
Of the Holy Islands, then, Eileach a' Naoimh, containing as it does the ruins of a monastic establishment of Columban or pre-Columban days, probably the oldest vestiges of the sort standing in Scotland, is by far the most interesting.

For many paddlers the aim of a visit to this archipelago is to see the ecclesiastical remains on Eileach an Naoimh, which is at the southern end of the island chain.
There are a number of possible landing places in the sheltered lagoon on the south side of the island.
Garbh Eileach, which is the largest island in the group, has a couple of small buildings close to the landing at Port Mor.

 The two weeks proir to our trip to the Garvellachs were absoluty perfect weather wise, with the exception of the wind ...
There are also some ruins on Garbh Eileach, which is the largest island in the group.
We anchored close to where the ruins were on Eileach an Naoimh, however the swell made a landing tricky, so we decided to try a little fishing instead.
I was hoping to do this again, but as some of the groups have not had much experience of a good drift dive, Dave thought it best that we dive something a little more sedate.

Eileach Naoimbh on the other hand had plenty of room.

We anchored briefly at Garbh Eileach in poor holding (kelp) and little swinging room off the cottage.

We stopped for a break in the bay around Rubha nam Faoileann out of the SW swell before heading up to Guirasdeal where we caught the West going jet of water from the Grey Dogs.
We made a quick circumcision of Eileach an Naoimh before going ashore at the ruined monastry to set up camp and feed the local midge population (~30km).
Next day an 8am start allowed up to catch the North-going flood and pass along the Western sea cliffs of Garbh Eileach before crossing to Belnahua in the Sound of Luing, catching a big push from the tide to pass Easdale, landing on the NW corner of Insh.
