The Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf soon was earning $5,000 a mile a year, and Stilwell, appointed as President of the line in 1897, was at the high point of his career.
Kansas City Southern's subsidiary Fort Smith and Van Buren acquired the original portion of the line from Coal Creek to McCurtain and the balance of the line west from McCurtain to Guthrie was scrapped.

Posted on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 2:05:00 PM The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that the project to widen U.S. Highway 50 to four lanes west of Garden City will be delayed two years because of design and right of way issues.
Garden City, Finney County and Holcomb officials have proposed that the highway sales tax be extended when it sunsets in 2008 to fund economic development.
KDOT also has announced that the widening of U.S. 50 to four lanes east of Garden City to south of the Garden City Regional Airport is near completion.
