The Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway Bridge, originally called the Burlington Bay Skyway Bridge and refered to locally as simply the Skyway Bridge, is located in Hamilton and Burlington.
The Skyway, as it locally known, is part of the Queen Elizabeth Way freeway linking Fort Erie with Toronto in Ontario.
After it was twinned, the proposed names of "James N. Allan Skyway" (in honour of the Ontario minister who championed the 1958 bridge) and "James N. Allan Burlington Bay Skyway" were rejected.

Erection of steel for the Garden City Skyway began January 1960, and in mid-July a 125-foot long welded plate girder was lifted into place.
The total length of the skyway is 3.5 miles (5.6 km), with 1.5 miles (2.4 km) for the bridge proper and two miles (3.2 km) of approaches.
The Garden City Skyway was opened to traffic on October 18, 1963, carrying the QEW over the Welland Canal at St. Catharines and, together with Highway 405, forging a high-speed, controlled-access link between the New York Thruway serving the eastern United States and the densely populated southern Ontario.

CATHARINES – Repairs to the concrete bridge deck on the Garden City Skyway are now underway Transportation Minister Brad Clark and Bart Maves, MPP for Niagara Falls announced today.
From March 19th to June 30th the Skyway will be reduced from six to four lanes - two lanes in each direction.
The Skyway repairs are scheduled for the spring to accommodate the peak summer travel season.

The Queen Elizabeth Way was extended further south to Fort Erie after World War II, leaving the QEW's original route to the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls as a branch which later became Highway 420.
High-level bridges were constructed at Hamilton (the Burlington Bay Skyway, later named the James N. Allan Skyway) and the Welland Canal in St. Catharines (the Garden City Skyway) in the 1960s to allow free movement of traffic without the need to stop for drawbridges; tolls on these bridges were eventually removed.
The QEW formerly continued beyond Highway 427 to the old Toronto city limit at the Humber River ; this section was downloaded from provincial to municipal ownership in about 2000 and became part of the Gardiner Expressway.

The Skyway repairs of two Toronto-bound lanes are being done now to minimize traffic impacts during the peak summer travel season.
The final phase of repairs of this three-year project is scheduled for late fall and the project is scheduled to be completed this year.

Note that the road is named for the late Queen Mother and not the current British monarch (who had not yet ascended to the throne when the route was opened in 1939).
Also unusual for a North American highway is the use of control cities, rather than cardinal directions, as the primary directional indication: one doesn't go "East" or "West" on the QEW; instead, one goes toward Fort Erie, "Niagara," or Toronto.
Note the lack of an exit number tab on the overhead sign, and the three control cities for the QEW.

Summer traffic has grown by over 30,000 vehicles daily or 44 per cent on the QEW over the past 10 years and is expected to increase a further 40 per cent over the next ten years.
Once this initiative is complete, the QEW will be widened from four to six lanes on key sections between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, and from Highway 406 to the Garden City Skyway Bridge in St. Catharines to accommodate this growth.
In May 2004 the governments of Canada and Ontario signed an agreement to share equally in the estimated $82.5 million cost of the QEW widening from four to six lanes between Hwy 406 and the Garden City Skyway Bridge in St. Catharines.
