Garden Island navy base, still looks as it did during World War II, but the island dates back further to the First Fleet who landed at Sydney Cove, where three colonists went ashore on a small harbour island and scratched their initials into the rocks.
Garden Island was established as a food source for the colony, on January 27, 1788, the day after the First Fleet arrived.
Another Garden Island relic is the tiny penknife that 21-year-old able seaman William Lamshed used 60 years ago to save the lives of 29 crew from HMAS Armidale, who were torpedoed off Timor on December 1, 1942.

In New South Wales, some of the light stations are parklands managed by the N.S.W. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
The island is open to the public, but capacity is limited and reservations are required.
This site is in the Jervis Bay Territory, a small section of New South Wales transferred to the Australian Capital Territory in 1915 and administered since then by Commonwealth authorities.

Garden Island is an inner-city locality of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
Garden Island is the principal east coast naval base of the RAN, and home port to many of the RAN's major ships.
Garden Island was originally an island in Sydney Harbour, but extension of the base and the construction of a dry dock in the channel between the island and the mainland have resulted in its connection to the mainland shore at Potts Point.

NEW South Wales Police have formally told the Federal Government that they fear the Garden Island navy base in Sydney is a sitting duck for terrorists.
Senior police believe not enough has been done to protect the dock, known as Fleet Base East, from a terror attack by land or water, despite new maritime regulations which came into force on July 1.
Police sources have said the base's location, amid the most densely populated suburbs of Australia, and its proximity to pedestrians make it attractive site for terrorists.
