Garden State movie review, In Film Australia
The film as a whole enjoys a similar stance and from this viewpoint it takes great pleasure orchestrating its jokes, which are flexible and funny – encompassing sight and dialog gags, situation comedy and even a touch or two of slapstick.
The film's sorrow is lined with a gentle border of optimism, and its humour concurrently suggests something profound softly simmering beneath the surface.
Garden State is Zach Braff's cinema christening, although he already shows a sound understanding of the principles associated with cinema conventions, and the all-important ability to twist and contort them into an experience that feels genuine, original and sentimental without being overpowering or obvious.

Zach Braff’s Sundance surprise, “Garden State,” may not be that significant for Generation Y, but it comes pretty damn close with director/writer/actor Braff’s keen eye for filmmaking and a simple, truth-be-told story that’s more realistic than any other Hollywood joint.
The story surrounding “Garden State” isn’t one all twenty-somethings have experienced, but it’s certainly one they can all relate to with rich images of life, death and love planted throughout the film.
“Garden State” could easily be called the best film of 2004, offering audiences a realistic coming-of-age tale that isn’t bogged down by Hollywood clichés, but rather lifted higher by an incredible cast and an even more remarkable directorial debut by from Zach Braff.

The characters that populated indy films in the 90s were sarcastic smart-asses who saw everything in their worlds through a "been there, done that" filter.
Zack Braff's directorial debut, Garden State, continues the trend toward this New Sincerity in indy filmmaking, and in fact the film is in some ways about this very transformation.
The comedy in the film is dry and occasionally very funny, but a few scenes seem tacked on--as if Braff had been compiling a lot of little funny moments in his notebook and wanted to include as many of them as he could.

FilmJerk.com - Film Review: "Garden State"
“Garden State” marks the debut of writer/director Braff, better known as the lead character J.D. on the hit NBC show, “Scrubs.” A film school graduate, and now an actor with serious Hollywood connections, Braff unleashes his first film on the world.
Because the film is such a hodgepodge of rhythms and aesthetics, “State” isn’t the searing portrait of dreary New Jersey rebirth quite as Braff imagines it.
The film is entertaining, occasionally roaringly funny, and often poignant with Largeman’s arc of trying to come to terms with his mother’s death.

There isn't much of a plot in Garden State, just Large passing the time away with Sam and Mark, sometimes in a very odd manner, but this just allows the viewer to really take notice of how Sam is slowly changing.
There is a constant barrage of weirdness in the film, from extra-friendly dogs, Sam's fl brother, and Mark's friend who invented silent velcro, but it never feels like Garden State is being quirky just to be quirky.
There is a constant reminder that Large is in town because of a funeral, and the long-awaited talk with his father (Ian Holm, The Return of the King, The Fellowship of the Ring).

"Garden State" is the story of one twenty-something young man coming home after nine years away, coming down off the antidepressants he's taken since childhood, and coming to grips with the world outside the fog that is his life.
Just looking at the movie trailer (which can be seen at gardenstatemovie.com) gives you a sense of the film's spectacular sense of visual drama and even irony, without including a single word of dialogue to suggest what it's about or whether it's any good.
It's not the first film to dramatize or satirize the moment in life when twenty-somethings, approaching the end of their freshness date, discover that after plodding through college and faithfully following all the rules, their reward is a lifeless, dead-end existence at the bottom of the ladder.

Braff astonishingly juggles many different tones and genres—the film is, among other things, an intuitive character study, a zany comedy, a drama of deep-seated wounds and past regrets, a rumination on finding oneself after years of aimless confusion, and one of the most heartbreakingly believable romances of the year.
For those audience members going through this period in their life, "Garden State" will undoubtedly seem to be speaking to them directly, and even for those who have already struggled through the experience and remember its emotional difficulty, they will return the film a knowing nod and, hopefully, a great deal of understanding.

IGN: Garden State: Music From The Motion Picture Review
For the most part, the inclusion of popular music in modern films has been relegated to the realm of brazen marketing: soak the soundtrack with the "hits" of the moment and hope that the key 13-35 demographic not only sees your film, but feels compelled to purchase the hastily concocted accompanying soundtrack.
For the most part the Garden State: Music From The Motion Picture soundtrack is a brilliant example of music carefully selected to fit together as a cohesive whole, a compilation with a common thread of emotional fortitude and romantic effervescence.
As a compliment to the film it is an amazing accomplishment and the fact that it resonates as strongly as it does separated from the film is further testament to Braff's keen aural sensibilities.
